I work in the Munich office while also having daily remote contacts with engineers in Warsaw. The collaboration within our workplace is strong, even across departments and for both remote and in-person work.
All team members I've worked with are very motivated, always bringing their best to their tasks, and a variety of work styles and skills. What's especially important for me, even with the high-achieving colleagues, there's an absence of corporate drama and unhealthy competitions. Everyone's supportive and helpful with each other.
Our work-life balance setup is pretty solid. It’s all about the impact you make, meeting deadlines, teamwork, and being present for daily stand-ups and key meetings. For folks with families or anyone needing a bit of time in the day for personal stuff, it's cool to flex your hours, start early or wrap up later.
In Munich office, management asks us to show up at the office twice a week to keep the team collaboration smooth. However, if you're looking to work from somewhere else, outside Munich or Germany, it's a bit tougher to get the green light compared to other tech places. At most, you can swing two weeks of remote work, which can be a stretch if have a family across the globe and need more time with them.
Reviewing in early 2024, I'm pretty confident that in my Munich-based design team, everyone is compensated fairly, reflecting their skills, past experience, and the impact of their work. This isn't just a gut feeling—I've lined this up against my previous jobs, interview experiences, and chats with former colleagues and friends in similar roles in tech-product companies or consulting services. I feel like our work is valued just right at the moment and will do my best to keep this.
On the job, everyone does their best and helps other colleagues out, building on the great atmosphere mentioned above.
Some colleagues also keep things lively with casual get-togethers after work, game nights, or some team-specific activities like Design Breakfast & Knowledge Sharing, that I feel helped with sense of belonging, especially for colleagues with international migration background. We also have a quarterly budget for smaller team events like dinner, minigolf, escape room, creative workshops. Teams from Warsaw and Munich can sometimes visit each other for these events.
Every year, the whole company comes together for a summer bash with product strategy workshop, executive updates, team games/treasure hunts and a fun party to wrap them up.
As is common in many tech companies, everyone's quite young. The age range in our Munich office spans from 20 to 45 years old. Being in my mid-thirties, I find myself among the older segment of the team. Despite the age diversity, I've observed no issues or friction when it comes to daily communication, both professionally and socially, with colleagues of any age group.
Our Senior Management does their best to keep things transparent by sharing the big picture goals every quarter and the thinking behind major decisions, and they're all for us asking why or wanting more details. I heard this used to not be the case (as seen in past Kununu reviews too), but this has changed until today (early 2024)
I report to one of the co-founders who's straightforward when we talk, always pushing us to say what we think, even if it's about questioning the way things are done around here. It's pretty cool because it means I can be upfront with him, no beating around the bush.
I've seen that not every team lead or supervisor has the same style—and some team members may feel less informed and less supported of by their managers.
We receive new tech devices like laptops and phones (for app testing), alongside quality monitors in the office, enhancing our work on the app.
The office space is equipped with a high-quality coffee machine, free fruits, snacks, and soft drinks, aligning with standard tech company offerings.
As for areas to improve, the Munich office currently faces a shortage of chairs for employees, and this is an issue that has persisted for the past 7 months. Also, the company does not provide a company phone with a data plan, which would be beneficial for completing work tasks during business travel.
One of the things I really appreciate about working here is how open and efficient most people are with their communication. It's not just about talking; it's about really getting to the core of issues and working together to find solutions. My colleagues and managers usually show a genuine willingness to improve our work practices, even to processes that have been in place for the last ten years.
Our top management includes all white europeans, with two women, which is a positive step toward gender diversity. There are several women in team lead positions within engineering, showcasing progress in gender representation in technical leadership roles. I see that the company's flexible work hours is also very helpful for parents, especially mothers, to still advance in their career.
Since joining in mid-2023, I've noticed a slight improvement in the racial diversity of the Munich office. However, there seems to be a lack of focused initiatives on diversity and inclusion from both smartpatient and our parent group, Shop Apotheke/Redcare. As a person of color, my perspective is shaped by broader industry observations, where I've seen that many tech companies in Germany still have a long way to improve in this area. More empathy and fundamental understanding of Diversity and Inclusion by the top management, paired with strategic initiatives with tangible goals on the topic, are the only ways the company could further enhance Diversity and Inclusion in the company.

The atmosphere in the company is always very positive and friendly.

There is a very flexible working policy. There is always the option to work from home if desired.

WLB is something that I experience at this company daily. I’ve never had any troubles because I had to leave work during the day to take care of personal things. You can work remotely and during the hours that suit you best.
I think I receive fair compensation for my work. I can’t complain about the offered benefits.
Admittedly, there are still a lot of things to do but the company is walking the right path and slowly making necessary adjustments in both offices.
They are the best, everyone is friendly towards each other, and many of us hang out after work and are really close friends.
You can work remotely if you like; from time to time you are required to come to the office and work from there. The lack of AC in the MUC office is certainly an issue during the summertime - working in such heat is sometimes unbearable.
There’s room for improvement. Communication has improved significantly since I joined smartpatient but I know that many colleagues expect more transparency from the management.

Ich finde die Arbeitsatmosphäre gut. Das Unternehmen ist ambitioniert, und das ist natürlich auch in dem Anspruch des Managements an die Mitarbeiter spürbar. Gleichzeitig herrscht ein lockerer Umgangston. Vertrauen muss man sich erarbeiten. Leistungen werden gewürdigt. Und was sehr schön ist: es wird "Danke" gesagt.

Super! Ich habe große Flexibilität bzgl. Arbeitsort und auch meine Arbeitszeiten kann ich mal variieren, wenn es private Termine gibt. Urlaub sprechen wir im Team ab, dabei versuchen wir die Bedürfnisse aller unter einen Hut zu bringen.
Ja, es gibt natürlich Karrieremöglichkeiten! Die haben aber nichts mit einem vorgeplanten Weg zu tun, sondern müssen selbst durch Einsatz und Leistung erschlossen werden. Im Bereich Weiterbildung dürfte es leichtere Zugangsmöglichkeiten geben zu Trainings etc.
Ich habe jedes Jahr ein Gehaltsgespräch.
Wir fliegen nur dann, wenn ein persönliches Meeting wirklich sein muss. Aktionen, z.B. um Menschen in akuten Krisen zu helfen, werden von Mitarbeitern und Management initiiert.
Ich arbeite sehr gerne mit meinen Kollegen zusammen. Es ist ein schönes Gefühl in einem super engagierten internationalen Team an einer tollen Mission zu arbeiten.

Ich habe ein gutes Verhältnis zu meinem Vorgesetzten. Wir können auch mal kontrovers diskutieren, was ich sehr schätze.
Ich habe alles, was ich brauche, um gut arbeiten zu können, egal wo ich bin. Die Einrichtung im office ist sehr minimalistisch. Ein bisschen Farbe würde dem office gut tun.
Die Kommunikation hat sich in den letzten Monaten verbessert. Es gibt regelmäßige Informationsveranstaltungen, in denen das Management nun auch sehr transparent zu Geschäftszahlen und Entscheidungen kommuniziert.
Das Thema wird nicht gepusht, aber es gibt auch keine negativen Facts dazu.
Ich fühle mich mit einen Aufgaben total wohl: meine Aufgaben sind abwechslungsreich und es geht drum möglichst schnell einen impact zu sehen.

Health-Care, immer etwas spannendes zu tun
Feedback von Mitarbeitern sowohl in Bezug auf Verbesserungsmöglichkeiten im jeweiligen Tätigkeitsfeld, als auch für das Unternehmen (mehr Urlaubstage, eine betriebliche Altersvorsorge, Anpassung an das Unternehmen von dem man aufgekauft wurde, etc) werden immer nur belächelt und man wird sogar ausgelacht. Das Management ist sehr auf sein eigenes Image fokussiert und übersieht, dass bei Smartpatient vor allem das Humankapital wertvoll ist und die vielen Ideen die die Mitarbeiter einbringen; es wäre Zeit was zurückzugeben und die Mitarbeiter ernst zu nehmen.
Die Atmosphäre wird den Mitarbeitern durch typische Start-up Allüren “schmackhaft” gemacht (neues Büro, Home Office Regelung, 1x kostenloses Mittagessen im Office pro Woche, Playstation, etc.). Leider kann man diese ganzen Annehmlichkeiten aufgrund der gestressten Arbeitsatmosphäre, Vorgesetzten die Spaß auf Kosten der Mitarbeiter machen und dem Konkurrenzkampf zwischen den Mitarbeitern nicht genießen.
Seit der Übernahme leidet das Image;
Viele Überstunden die durch schlechte Kommunikation, mangelnde Prozesse und schlechte Aufgabenverteilung durch das Management zustandekommen. Einen Ausgleich, weder finanziell noch Freizeit, gibt es nicht und auch nach Diskussionen und Beweisen werden Überstunden nur belächelt.
Weiterbildungsangebote gibt es keine oder lediglich online die man nach der Arbeitszeit wahrnehmen kann; Sprachkurse können finanziell übernommen werden. Eine Weiterentwicklung innerhalb des Unternehmens ist kaum möglich, da es nur wenige Stufen inneralb der HR Struktur gibt und ein Aufstieg wenigen vorbehalten ist; Leider ist auch von individueller Förderung von motivierten Mitarbeitern nichts zu spüren.
Unter den Kollegen top, mit dem Management viel gespielt um den Schein zu wahren oder sich zu profilieren…
Schönes, neues Büro und gute Home Office Regelung;
Keine Feedback Kultur zwischen Mitarbeitern und Management. An Verbesserung in diesem Feld wird gearbeitet. Unter den Kollegen auf gleichem Level ist die Kommunikation sehr gut, man hilft wo man kann und unterstützt sich gegenseitig um nicht von der Flut an Aufgaben (die leider oft durch Misskommunikation oder mangelnde Kommunikation des Managements noch vergrößert wird) “erschlagen” zu werden. Mitarbeiter werden grundsätzlich kaum, sehr spät oder zum Schein einbezogen, Schade, da es viele motivierte Talente mit guten Ideen im Unternehmen gibt!
Das Gehalt liegt unter dem Branchendurchschnitt und ist vor allem für die Arbeitszeit und die Verantwortung zu gering; Gut vorbereitet Argumente und auch die Übernahme von mehr Verantwortung, Aufgaben führen nicht zu einer Gehaltsanpassung und werden nur einigen wenigen Kollegen ermöglicht.

It depends on who you work with. Colleagues at the same level are pretty friendly and easy-going. Chiefs will treat you a bit lofty. They don't mean that bad probably, just humbleness is missing.
The company is pretty small and immature, but you are absolutely cut off from the organization in Munich.

We do not have any :D If someone is over 30 he is just leaving because there is no outlook to grow. As far as I know, there is no middle management and I do not see even space for them under current setup (chiefs take all decisions which causes certain bottlenecks also...)
I guess they are trying their best, but some leadership coaching could definitely help them. Otherwise, it will be just about chiefs and couple kids around them.
More open communication and sincerity would be definitely beneficial.
We are just small company...so you just write mail there, code a bit here, go to some meeting where nothing is finally decided and back :)
