no product on the market or marketing done so far so there is not really an "image" outside of the company but that's natural if you just building your first product
it's a startup, there is a lot of flexibility never had an issue with it here
everything I need
working on a common goal gets everyone together, which you do not often have in companies
modern office, very good location
The company has been growing quite a lot, and processes and communication are, for sure, behind as they should be, but it's getting better
working on cutting-edge products
cool people, cool team, great location
guys you are the only reason for me to stay that long!!
Update: As I have left (and some of you as well): be strong and all the best!!
the company is currently destroyed top to bottom. The owner is destroying his toy and will cry over it afterwards, but that's life
keep the owner/investor off the daily business. When it ever comes to marketing and going public he is the man, but not for development or engineering. Taking decisions isn't his strength.
Less dreams and more ground based thinking might give the twist and make the company survive, but I for myself have decided that the risk is too high for me and I look around for another option as MANY(most?) others do as well.
it would be very cool if the owner didn't jeopardize. private relationships and interesting topics hold us back from leaving immediately. very international - English is the main language
as the company is in "stealth mode" the prevent the disclosure of information (as workaround search for patents...) there is no external image. internal image around -273°C
if the job is not your life you have a problem. no flexibility (officially, but you can find bypasses)
the owner drives a Tesla and comes by train. At the moment everything should be perfectly "green" designed. When it comes to reality due to cost reasons most probably there will be only "green washing" left over
negative report, at least there have been German classes at the office (at dinner time)
between colleagues it is good. Up to now management doesn't play games to get people work against each other (though gaps between departments start to open up)
80% are <30y, 40+ have been rather fired recently (due to higher wages together with their seniority) - one of the many erratic decisions to fire senior people in an high-end tech-startup
the owner rules into the company and management mostly does not absorb but rather amplifies pressure and strange ideas
wages are rather high but they don't really compensate for the missing appreciation. Office is new and fancy at the Hauptbahnhof but rather bring your own office chair (to prevent back pain, the provided ones are mostly broken and in disgusting condition) and headset (to be able to use Teams, no phones to communicate to the rest of the world btw).
Update: Chairs not replaced after 1 year.
between colleagues sometimes information is not forwarded (this happens everywhere). but from management information is held back on purpose (paranoia) and the "need to know principle" is the master of all information
wages rather high but 5 weeks holidays for an all-in contract is not competitive (and 2 of that are pushed to be consumed at Christmas!), Homeoffice only if negotiated before signing the contract
No canteen or restaurant tickets. Be prepared to pay 11€ for food every day or go for junk food (at least there are microwaves in the kitchen)
the one and only reason to be there, but erratic decisions from top management jeopardize this completely. Why do something interesting if its trashed 2 months later anyways?
Where to start..
Doesn’t matter because problems are well know (by HR) but no one except the CEO who is the investor has something to say
The collegues are amazing - highly qualified and motivated - the moment you get in touch with the management you get impossible tasks and even when you reach them, you are not getting credit for it.
Nobody is allowed to talk about what they work.
As in many startups the workload is high and the deadlines short so you have to well manage your own balance - its easy to do over hours although it's not always required
Salary is usually above average. There are lunch vouchers.
Cannot state anything bad here.
High level of trust and reliability between the collegues. Some afterwork activities certainly also play a role in this.
Even though the whole company is generally quite young everybody incl. elders are treated equally.
Middle management tries hard to treat everyone individually and personally - upper management sees you a pure resource and wants you to give "more effort", which usually means overtime.
A lot of discussion on work equipment like more than two screen, chairs that don't collapse or even just an ergonomic mouse... but you can make an arrangement on your equipment while being hired, then it seems not to be a problem.
Communication consists mostly of giving (near to) impossible deadlines.
I have not heard of any harrassment due to gender, nationality, race or similar. Its quite a divers team.
The challenges are great, but sadly people are not given the time to solve them properly.
Great colleges. Good public transport connections. Shops in the vicinity.
Bad communication. Noisy and distracting workplace. Very bad work atmosphere.
Listen to the employees. They have decades of work experience, and can save a lot of time and resources by not doing unnecessary and useless tasks.
Talk to the employees. Make them involved in an open communication with the shareholders. Try to create a trusting environment where everybody can open up. Not some motivational method from a book. Just talk.
Make sure the shareholders listen to the problems. I know it’s uncomfortable, but essential to make the right decisions.
Create a better environment for R&D work.
The colleges are nice, but there is an atmosphere of mistrust towards the management. Colleges were fired without reason given, and that made everybody nervous. The employees are afraid to be sacked for something they unintentionally do or say. That kills the atmosphere in the company.
We are in stealth mode...
A minimum of 45 hours per week are expected, and employees are valued after spent hours instead of performance and quality. Many people are still in the office at late hours, even the ones with kids. The shareholder used to go around the office around 6:30 pm just to see who is still there. If you are someone who likes to start early - well, bad luck…
There is no effort from the management to improve the employees. If you want to improve you have to do it yourself. In your own time.
The pay looks good on paper, but if you consider the extra hours it loses its charm fast. Raises are very hard to get. The collective agreement does force the company to cover any annual inflation - so they don't.
Environment - we have a selective trash bin.
Social awareness - can’t list anything.
The employees have a huge potential, also in soft skills. There is a good collegial spirit, also like to spend time with each other after hours. There is no support or strengthening effort from the management side in this direction.
That is practically not existent as there are only a handful of people over 40. Those are also expected to spend long hours even if they have family and children. I don’t think that we have someone over 50. There are no “hardened veteran” engineers you could turn to for support or guidance.
It is a prime example of bad management. The employees have the strong feeling that their professional opinions are not heard. The mid level management is stuck in a position between the need of flexibility from the side of the R&D and the rigid stance of the shareholders. Those causes friction that can be felt throughout the whole company, consumes way too much resources and causes too much unnecessary stress.
The open office space is very noisy and distracting, making concentrated creative work very hard to maintain. The chairs are uncomfortable, the desks are height adjustable at least. The office looks nice and is clean. Just not fitted for R&D work.
The communication is 100% one direction. The shareholders share the vision and goals, but do not want to listen to the response of the experts. The goal is in focus, but the road to there with the obstacles is not paid any attention.
As the company does mainly mechanical engineering, there are not many female colleges.
There are interesting tasks, but as the professional opinion of the technical experts is often neglected - as it harms “The Vision” - the employees end up doing tasks they see unnecessary or try to reach unattainable goals.
Extrem interessante Aufgaben.
Andererseits verständlich, wenn man stark innovieren will.
Very bad, but only because of the culture that management pushes on the workers. There is a significant effort placed into avoiding that people from different departments brief and talk about how work is going on each other's side. Logic is: "Focus on your work, don't worry about other topics".
That makes misalignment between departments constant, since all the information needs then to be communicated by the higher hierarchy. Which feels like the goal all along. This way there is always a chance to push a department more by saying that it is delayed when compared to others. The official reason given by management for this way of work has to do with secrecy of sensible information. Which just shows the lack of trust towards employees.
The transparency is so bad, it goes to the point in which there are changes in C level and you only find out months later by the most unofficial of channels.
All of this creates a somewhat heavy, foggy work environment and has significantly increased the company's employee fluctuation, which definitely crashes any hope of having a good work atmosphere.
You might notice that employees struggle to give good comments on the company itself.
Not really possible to call it a balance. In the development teams, people are overworked and accusing symptoms of pre burnout. It is pretty noticeable if people stop and look carefully.
There is a core time, but it is not the same across the organization, which feels weird. Some have 9h30-13h30 core time in their contracts, some have 9h30-15h or 15h30.
Just seems like there is no time to talk about investing in the employees' career. Specially if the employee shows interest in learning something new and possibly not related to his current position. There is no time or budget that can be allocated to actually invest in trainings.
The company did agree on having a significant number of employees engage in educational leave.
Employee benefits are close to none. Salary tends to be appropriate to the job, but depends on the negotiation skills of the applicant.
Right now if you check open positions, you will see Juniors without any required experience being offered a minimum value that is 3200€ brutto per month. A similar job offer but for a Mid level applicant with at least 2 years experience is stating an offered minimum of 3500€ brutto per month.
Sounds like a narrow gap where a Junior could be even earning more than a mid level? That's because it definitely could happen. Employees need to keep eyes and ears open. A vacancy for your own exact job might open up offering more money than what you are earning currently. This has happened before, as it seems nobody is keeping at check the offered salaries to employees and applicants.
Boxes from orders get recycled and there is space for used coffee grind and Bio garbage. But a lot more could be done. The dishwashers get turned on several times with a very low load, for example.
Regarding what the company is developing, there are some considerations, but only time will tell.
Actually pretty surprising. Even with so much pressure and confusion coming from above, the work teams do an unbelievable effort to compensate errors and adapt to the needs of colleagues. Most of the people in the development team have an absurd amount of extra hours just to try and achieve the unrealistic goals, but even then they keep being supportive, open and cooperative.
"older" as in colleagues that are 50 years or so and older, there are not many of them, but like stated before, between colleagues the work goes nicely. The company is very international and everyone is quite open minded and easy going.
"older" as people that have been with the company for long: They are rare and with all the fluctuation, being 1 year with the company already means that you are an "older" colleague.
Mid layers are OK, but the higher you look, the more you will see micromanaging happening, which comes from abnormally low trust levels in the work team.
There is also a huge gap between what people think is the state of the development plan and what it actually is. One can really identify a similar state as the one in the fable of "The Emperor's New Clothes". The image often given to applicants for job offers is that development is at a state in which it is not. Even after signing an NDA with the company, the applicants get no information about what the company is developing, which feels shady. And then people obviously resign during the probation period, as their expectations are not met.
This also happened with older colleagues and home office. In the interviews they were told that home office is not a problem, only to be told later after being hired and without any warning that they cannot apply for home office as they do not have an "Home Office Agreement". Nothing short of blatant lying.
Horrible chairs, temperature can be very high inside the building. Artificial light is terribly cold and can make your eyes tired very frequently.
PC monitors are not fit for high performance graphical work and somehow having more than 2 monitors is a taboo? (but some people are allowed to have 3, guess it depends on negotiation skills)
Coffee is free and from a good brand.
Proper guidance from the highest hierarchies is close to null (hence the Peter Principle). Mostly the base levels need to push to add topics to the agenda of higher ones so that the work actually resembles a product development path. Lots of times when this communication happens, it gets completely misunderstood or even ignored, because there is no time to dedicate to those communicated points. Also feels like the understanding of development phases is weak at best.
Between men and women? Feels fair and never noticed any difference of treatment.
Between departments? Management has definitely favorites. Engineering/development departments tend to be the sacrificed ones.
Work can be quite interesting, but targets/priorities of development change on a daily basis and with very little justification.
Great spirit across teams
The working time is quite flexible. Core working hours are from 9:30 to 15:00
Lots of opportunities
The company supports fair trade and organic products
Good collaboration across teams, startup spirit
There is always an open ear for new ideas
Modern office with a great view, open plan office, lots of space
Monthly town hall meetings and employee newsletter
As the company is growing, there is great potential for development and new challenges
colleagues
epitome is the toy of the investor and not a proper company. The owner has zero emapthy for his emoyees. He is incapable of making decisions but asks 110% performance and identification despite his rude behaviour
let the management team run the company, not the investor who has no idea about product development
* lots of frustration and fear within the teams - especially since several employees got fired without a reason or even explanation
* high fluctuation - employees are leaving due to the terrible corporate culture and poor development approach
* management by fear - everybody is afraid to be next who gets fired, so you better don't think critically or share your opinion, but do what you are asked
* performance is measured by the amount of overtime, not quality of output
* employee satisfaction is of no interest for top management and especially owner/main investor - no private conversations or coffee breaks; no christmas party; no "thank you for your effort and performance"
* zero trust towards employees - home office only in special occasions, employee surveillance, very little information shared within the company
nobody would currently recommond this company to a friend
no home office possibility (except agreed in work contract when starting the job)
flatrate ("All-In") contract with no possibility of accumulating extra hours, 45h are expected at least!
performance is measured by overtime - do not think that working 40h/week is enough, even though the results and performance are great
short-notice vacation is most of the time possible, but taking longer than 2,5 weeks off is difficult/impossible
no proper skills development
the only trainings which are accepted are short, superficial trainings - and these are only accepted because it is necessary to proof trainings for the medical device certification
most people have above average salaries, but there a zero corporate benefits or other social contributions. Not any inflation bonus or tax-free government supported initiatives are paid
superficially, environmental safety is important, but when it comes down to it, it doesn't matter
social responsibility is non-existent - firing people without reason/explanation; no corporate social benefits; not a single thought about employee satisfaction
within the teams, the support and camaraderie is great, but cooperation and support with different teams is poor. this is also due to the "us" and "them" thinking which top management emphasises
there are not a lot of "older colleagues"
short-term thinking and results are more important for management than long-term success
no clear direction and vision how to develeop a product
not clear how employee performance is measured - constant fear of being the next one who gets fired
almost impossible to get the necessary work equipment to work efficiently and properly (no laptop, headset; CAD licenses are limited)
prototype workshop is not up to the demanded and necessary quality
workplace safety and employee safety ethics are questionable
"gossip is the official communication channel" - no proper corporate communication is done
women in high responsibility positions, but difficult for women to get promoted
lots of nationalities in the company, but foreigners tend to earn less
if you are into research and concept development, it would great if priorities wouldn't shift every 2 weeks. if you like structured product development and bringing products to market, it is a nightmare
