Friendly work environment, but high work load with often pivoting direction

Former EmployeeDid no longer work in IT in Linz, Oberösterreich at the time of review.

What I like about the employer

I actually enjoyed working there. colleagues & team work works very well. there are several high potentials in the company. the company culture, which owners and mgmt actively promote is very open and welcoming. onboarding and offboarding process is done well. strong focus on People & Culture helps. flexible work hours.

What I dislike about the employer

vision is unclear or seems to change a lot. i missed structure and clear goals during my time at smec. a lot is done ad-hoc. work load is too much and in no relation to the salary, if you dont actively push back on it. location of Linz office is not super-easy to reach by public transport, but good with a bike

Suggestions for improvement

clarify and stick to vision. provide more structure and direction to get rid of redundant tasks

Working atmosphere

in general quite good

Image

ok in the PPC field, i guess

Work-Life Balance

not adequate for salary level

Career/Professional development

depends; very good internal onboarding, little or no other, more general trainings.

Salary/Social benefits

in absolute terms okay, but in my opinion for the general workload rather on the lower level (depending on which other companies you compare it to). but there are perks like parties, etc.

Environmental and social responsibility

there are efforts

Collegiality

very positive

Interaction with older colleagues

good as far as I can tell

Leadership behavior

depends. In general good intentions and open communication and collaborative culture, but not always structured enough to provide good guidance; regular changes in direction of vision

Working conditions

nice offices, macbook, flexibility from where you work. offices in nice locations. telephone booths for calls exist, but are small and quickly have bad air inside. both offices have open floor plans (which is pretty much industry standard) - if you like this, perfect. if not, you might get distracted more easily

Communication

mgmt makes efforts to communicate very openly, but the not so positive information is often sugar-coated and not transparent

Equality

there are efforts. still male-dominated top mgmt.

Interesting tasks

depends, but in general yes. if you are proactive, you can co-define some of your work

Amazing people but the company lacks long-term vision

3.0

Did no longer work for this company in Linz, Oberösterreich at the time of review.

What I like about the employer

- The amazing colleagues
- Weekly team lunches & breakfast
- Equipment (Apple hardware, home office equipment)
- Mental & physical health initiatives
- Linz office is pretty cool from an architectural point of view, Vienna office is very convenient
- They really tried to make the off-boarding process for laid-off employees as easy as possible and provided support (kudos to the People & Culture team!)
- Meetups & parties are really fun

What I dislike about the employer

- Lack of vision from leadership
- Too many cooks spoil the broth: Often there were many people with different agendas involved in one project, making it hard to work in an agile & fast way. This causes the company to lose valuable time to respond to the changing customer & market needs.

Suggestions for improvement

- Be more transparent if the company is struggling.
- Appreciate and support your in-house talent. There are so many knowledgable
people in the company that would be dearly missed if they ever left smec.

Working atmosphere

Depends on the team. In my case, the overall work environment was very good, transparent & open. It was a pleasure to work with highly-motivated people. However, this positive vibe is not the norm for every department/team. Especially client-facing units seemed to struggle due to competitiveness between the teams.

Image

Depends on who you ask - outside of the online retail sector barely anyone knows them. They try really hard to keep up their good employee ratings to be attractive to talent.

Work-Life Balance

Depends on the department or team you work in. While there were some fixed meetings throughout the week, the rest of the working day was rather flexible. They allow home office for 2 days a week. Unfortunately, their remote work policy to work from abroad is rather rigid.

Environmental and social responsibility

Waste separation, organic snacks, collecting donations for Ukraine & Christmas - so it could be more

Collegiality

In my team it was excellent

Interaction with older colleagues

There were only few older employees

Leadership behavior

Sometimes it seemed like leadership was relying on their gut feeling instead of data when making decisions. Ad hoc changes in strategy and re-prioritizations were very common, making work unpredictable. Employees are rarely asked for their opinions.

Working conditions

Good equipment, however no adjustable desks in the Linz office (only in Vienna)

Communication

smec prides itself on communicating openly & transparently (e.g. through meet ups & townhall meetings), but only if it's something positive. The bad news about the company you'll only hear through the grapevine. One specific example: They started booking rooms for employees for a company event only a few days before laying off a significant amount of people. No signs from leadership that the company was struggling before, but many people already suspected something like this had to happen.

Salary/Social benefits

Industry-average

Equality

C-level is male-only and only a couple of women are in leading positions. Other than that it seems that whoever is friends with the higher-ups gets the promotion - it's getting more and more political.

What I like about the employer

very cool onboarding system for new employees, open communication, being able to work remotely, always a lot of fun in the office
breakfast & lunch

Suggestions for improvement

focus a bit more on people's mental health - many people seem stressed out

Working atmosphere

even though people seem very stressed out at work, there's almost always a good atmosphere, everybody is open-minded for conversations :)

Work-Life Balance

especially with being able to work remotely or 10 days abroad/year, smec really focuses on work-life-balance - there are also yoga classes & employees have access to psycholgists which is also great

Salary/Social benefits

+ bonussystem

Collegiality

Communication

Working atmosphere

Work-Life Balance

Es kommt darauf an, was man daraus macht.

Environmental and social responsibility

Interaction with older colleagues

What I like about the employer

- the employees

What I dislike about the employer

already mentioned above

Suggestions for improvement

- putting less pressure on people
- live according to your words

Working atmosphere

- Mostly stress oriented - it kinda makes me sad how some of my favorite coworkers are overwhelmed with the workload and emotionally drowning. Some employees are not valued as much as they should be and do not receive the level of appreciation that they deserve. There were people crying because of work.

+ The coworkers definitely help here and improve the situation. If it wouldn’t be for them the culture would look differently.

Image

Externally -> great. (Marketing does the job)
Internally -> not so much.

Work-Life Balance

- Basically non-existent, you are not supposed to use the word in the company since top-level management does not like the term. Stress is the predominant modus operandi. If you leave early or spend to much time at the coffee machine bad remarks are made.

+ You can arrange your schedule to take doctors appointments etc.

Career/Professional development

- Middle management positions are filled with external hires. There is not much chance to get into one unless you are able to sell yourself well and get along with top management. What you deliver in terms of work does not really count.

+ There are possibilities to work yourself up in the career path, but this usually comes with continuing to do what you already did, just with a nicer job title.

Salary/Social benefits

- Salaries are low. Juniors are pushed into all-in contracts even if it is their first job and they have little opportunities to find out how many hours of work the job requires.

+ You can get bonuses.

Environmental and social responsibility

There are initiatives that support social causes, but internally there is not much done.

Collegiality

+ The mindset among the colleagues is definitely the best part about the company (most of the employees that work there are amazing, I met great people that are now friends). Most coworkers are extremely helpful, you will always find someone to support you and give you additional input if needed. It is really amazing how great the relationship among colleagues can be. Also the company allows you to stay in the office after work to have a beer/wine.

Interaction with older colleagues

+ Older colleagues are in some cases even favored. Especially when introducing fixed office days, the rules did not apply.

Leadership behavior

- No leadership -> decisions are changed constantly, there is no clear line, especially top management does not keep their word, you basically never know what is right or wrong in a specific moment.

- Additionally, there is a strong emphasis on making sure everyone is equal. This is however not lived by top-management. Your are e.g. supposed to put your dirty cups into the dishwasher, but the higher you get the less you will see that. Equality is praised, but not demonstrated in the higher ranks.

Working conditions

- The office in general is nice and pretty, but you do not get height-adjustable desks, as it is more important to have a nice office than an ergonomically well adjustable one.

+ Great to be able to work on Mac Books.

Communication

- There are different formats and you are able to ask questions, but mostly not anonymously which makes it difficult. No one really dares to ask challenging questions in fear of repercussions.

+ Formats are mostly standardized. You know what to expect in each one.

Equality

+ There are initiatives for woman, but not everyone is included.

Interesting tasks

- There are definitely a few, but most of the tasks come from permanently changing direction and not knowing what to do exactly, it is a lot of overhead that could be easily avoided.

+ If you want to work more / take more responsibility you definitely have the chance to evolve your role with flexibility.

Dear former smecie,

Thank you very much for taking the time to review smec as your ex-employer. We appreciate every single feedback and we listen carefully – especially if the feedback is critical and it might help us to improve.

It's a shame that we couldn't live up to your expectations of a top employer. In any case, we will take a look at the points you’ve mentioned regarding the lack of clarity about the strategic direction and the leadership behavior in order to see what we can do better here in the future.

However some of the statements we dismiss are:
(a) Middle Management positions are filled with external hirings - not truthful - We have a strong commitment to developing our people even on an individual level be it methodical skills, leadership, and other meaningful topics. The majority of our management positions are hired internally: In the last 6 months, 7 colleagues have been internally promoted to leadership positions. Only when the specific skill set or level of experience is not available but necessary to make a strategic leap, we recruit externally.
(b) Salaries - not truthful - Salaries at smec are well within the usual market salary ranges: 87% (of 111 ratings on kununu) consider the salary to be good or very good at smec.
(c) Work life balance: Yes, there are phases of increased workload for us as well. Compared to many other companies, our Flexitime is very generous, from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Our employees can live this way, of course adapted to the requirements of the respective role, the demands of working with colleagues or the needs of our clients. Also, we were awarded one of the top 10 most family-friendly employers in Austria one month ago.

I’m deeply sorry to hear that you consider your tasks at smec as not interesting enough. I truly hope that you have found a workplace that fits better to your individual expectations.

Internal struggles made for a frustrating Work Environment

2.8

Former EmployeeDid no longer work in Marketing / Product management in Linz, Oberösterreich at the time of review.

What I like about the employer

The work itself was fun and rewarding, a lot of the people are amazing, they do at times spend on their employees for things like birthday presents or parties.

What I dislike about the employer

Lots of internal struggle and questionable decisions from Management, bad communication, general feeling of a downward trend.

Working atmosphere

It really depends in which department you work, but in general at least within a lot of teams there is a positive working atmosphere.

Image

Has been on a steady decline.

Career/Professional development

Strongly depends on the department. A lot of people don't have the time to work on their career paths. However, it should be noted that there are also positive examples of people who have been able to start at the bottom and work their way up.

Salary/Social benefits

Used to be competitive but not so anymore.

Environmental and social responsibility

I am not aware of any actions in this direction.

Collegiality

Really depends. A lot of key people are way over-worked and therefore often reluctant to help out. However. I have also had a lot of co-workers who were always eager to help.

Leadership behavior

My immediate supervisors were fair and upfront, however a lot of the top-down communication, especially over the last year was at times deceptive and dishonest. On several occasions people have been pressured into positions they didn't want or denied positions for flimsy reasons.

Communication

Probably one of the things that need improvement the most. Both top-down as well as between departments communication can be really frustrating and unproductive.

Dear former smecie,

Thank you for the work you did at smec and for living transparency by reviewing your time with us. I am glad to read that you enjoyed your work itself, the collaboration with (many of) your colleagues and the great working atmosphere.

I'm sorry to read that you perceived internal communication as less than optimal. We aim to communicate clearly and transparently at all times – it is, obviously, not an easy task to satisfy everyone on the “right” mode of communication. We are working on that. For example, we offer regular Q&A sessions and due to recent changes we gave you the opportunity to ask very individual questions, which were all answered by our management.

Just as we are also working on improving the cross-departmental collaboration – for example, we will rearrange our office space in a way to place the development team near our client office people to promote daily collaboration and open exchange. We expect a very positive result here.

We are surprised about your comment on the career development, as every smecies gets time to work on his/her personal development (or career path) – supported by a regular competence evaluation and check-ins with the direct manager. If your individual circumstances did not allow this, we are sorry that we could not provide you with the right support.

Thank you once again for being part of our journey and for your honest feedback. We wish you all the best.

Working atmosphere

Work-Life Balance

Environmental and social responsibility

Leadership behavior

Man begegnet seinen Vorgesetzten stets auf Augenhöhe.

Communication
