Some management have not understood that money is a hygiene factor. As long as it's good enough, more money will not motivate people. Once you hurt people financially however, you will very quickly loose a lot of their interest, motivation and satisfaction.

3.5% inflation. Unfortunately Adnovum is doing so badly, they can only afford a 1% compensation. It hurts to then read that we managed to increase our revenue once again. Significantly. Where are we bleeding money? It isn't going to the employees. Government employees get 2% inflation compensation, but we're doing so badly, we can't afford that. We only get 1%.
You really missed a chance to keep motivation high. Now, let's see how you will do damage control and deal with the demotivation and discontent that will now set in. Or will you only wake up once the good people start leaving?
