My employment was terminated during the probationary period. The decision came as a surprise because I had not previously received a warning or feedback indicating that my performance or working habits were putting my employment at risk.
During the termination discussion, I was told that concerns included my use of YouTube/podcasts while working and a perception that I spent too much time in the rest area. From my perspective, I generally listened to content while continuing to work, and when I stepped away from my desk it could also be while waiting for longer-running tests or processes to finish.
What disappointed me most was not simply the termination itself, but that these concerns had never been communicated to me beforehand. Had they been raised earlier, I would have had the opportunity to explain the circumstances and immediately adjust my behavior.
Given the amount of technical work I had completed and the fact that I had contributed to a successful release, I would have appreciated direct feedback and an opportunity to address these concerns before such a final decision was made.
