Shared Leadership at Swarovski

Shared Leadership at Swarovski

Jennifer Wurm and Susanne Hutter-Ennemoser hold the first joint management position at Swarovski.

Name: Jennifer Wurm, Susanne Hutter-Ennemoser

My Old Position at Swarovski: Senior Specialist Order Fulfillment, Head of Logistics Services

My New Position at Swarovski: Head of Logistics Wattens

Number of years at Swarovski: 30 years (13 + 17 years)

Country of residence: Austria

What did you do in your old position at Swarovski?

We were leading teams within the Supply Chain Management (SCM B2B) organization aiming for on-time and in-full deliveries to our global clients. In strong collaboration with our Supply Chain colleagues, Marketing, Sales, and various other stakeholders, we continuously improved these processes and operations to achieve excellence for the B2B order fulfillment.

What are you doing in your current position at Swarovski?

We are responsible for all logistics operations in Wattens. This includes intralogistics (physical goods flow within the plant), supplying production entities with components out of our fully automated, high rack facility as well as the global distribution of B2B components to our clients, including invoicing, customs clearance and other admin tasks.
We are leading a team of 85 individuals in four teams, fully integrated into the One Swarovski world.

How does your job-sharing work?

So far – pretty successful!

We are both part-time working parents, covering the full working hours of one position together. We have established the so-called hybrid work sharing model. Organizational tasks (e.g. HR topics, budgets) are handled by both of us, whereas we have split responsibilities with regards to the separate professional entities (e.g., Jennifer is responsible for Dispatch, Admin and Facilities, Susanne for Warehousing, Intralogistics and Logistics Services).

This hybrid model was the right decision for us because it’s important for our team leaders to report to one person only. The teams can discuss challenges and general issues daily, as we are both equally responsible for HR and budget topics. Another key learning is that you need some time together in one office, because then the communication and exchange happens smoothly. For this split to be successful, you need good communication skills and flexibility is key – both in terms of working hours and daily operational tasks.

Additional benefits of sharing the role are the empowerment of the team, since we are not with them 100% of the time and we take high quality decisions, because every decision has already been challenged by someone.

From a personal perspective, shared leadership also means shared worries and troubles – which heavily pays off in mental health for us as leaders. We are convinced that it was worth the risk of trying something completely new and that job sharing really works. We got a lot of positive feedback in the last six months, and it feels great to be role-models for other departments.

How did the whole concept of job-sharing start?

We mentioned during our HR meeting that after coming back from maternity, we would highly welcome a shared leadership position. We started in different roles, but 2021 brought the option to apply for a leadership position together.

When our predecessor left the company, the Head of Logistics Wattens position became available, and with our leadership backgrounds in SCM, and our ambition, we were eager to take this great opportunity. This ambition was fully supported by our superiors and HR.

We prepared a case study, including a SWOT analysis on shared leadership, as we wanted to be fully transparent about all the expected and assumed challenges and opportunities of this setup. After this, a bold decision was taken, and we started in the first shared leadership position at Swarovski.

What does career mean to you?

To discover, explore and grab new opportunities. The freedom to express personal opinions openly and honestly and “being allowed” to create new paths. We would like to give one advice all our ambitious colleagues – feel empowered to go forward with new ways of working!
