Project Engineer I - Calibration

AVL Mobility Technologies, Inc. MTI is looking for a motivated engineer to join our Calibration team. We are specifically looking for an individual experienced/knowledgeable in internal combustion engine emissions and OBD calibration. Qualified candidates will possess a minimum of 3-5+ years postgraduate experience in a relevant position. The Project Engineer opportunity requires a candidate with strong communication skills as this position will directly interface with the customer and internal teams.

Skill Team Roles:

The specific roles of a Project Engineer in this effort include:

  • Defines, plans, and performs engine, powertrain calibration and other relevant engineering project work within project team as required.
  • Plans and manages engineering resources according to project requirements.
  • Works on specific phases or aspects of projects such as technical studies, preparation of specifications, technical plans, engine testing, vehicle testing, data analysis and validation.
  • Supports/ensures data quality and writes technical project reports.
  • Reviews project for compliance with engineering principles, company standards, and customer requirements, including opinions and interpretations.
  • Coordinates activities concerned with technical development, scheduling, and resolving engineering test issues.
  • Defines, executes and supports research and development activities.
  • Participates in customer meetings.
  • Communicates test results, progress and issues as they arise to project team and customer.
  • Participates in powertrain calibration development trips as required.
  • Other duties as required to ensure project success.

Qualifications/Skills:

Experience and Education

  • 0-3+ years’ experience required
  • Bachelors’ degree in Engineering required
  • Master’s degree in Engineering preferred
  • Experience and exposure to Automaker Practices is beneficial

A Project Engineer is expected to have demonstrated abilities in the following areas:

  • Technical
    • A thorough understanding of Internal Combustion Engines and Powertrain related vehicle systems functionality
    • A basic understanding of IC engine emissions controls components, After Treatment Systems and functionality.
    • Powertrain Calibration development experience with achieving automotive tailpipe emissions standards.
    • OBD Calibration to achieve automotive OBD requirements: Monitors (CCM, Catalyst, Misfire, EGR, AFRIM, HEGO, Etc.)
    • OBD Self-Cert Demonstration, Documentation, Statistics and Reporting (Green, 4km, Full Useful Life, OBD limit components, WPA and BPU, In Use Monitor Performance (IUMPR))
    • Ability to be effective in: Powertrain Calibration optimization, Vehicle development trip support, and operating in a professional testing environment.
    • Working experience/knowledge/skills in: Etas INCA, ATI Vision, Vector CANape, CANalyzer, C Code interpretation, and Microsoft Office.
  • Identify, initiate, and support opportunities for technology development, process improvements, tool development, and knowledge capture and re-use.
  • Relational/Professional
    • Active support of Group Leader for managing of small technical teams
    • Working effectively with customers and other program staff and team members
    • Accountability for individual and team delivery
    • Active pursuit of personal and departmental improvement
    • Effective communication with all levels of the program team
    • Active involvement in Annual Review and Work Planning Process.
  • Commercial
    • Support the Business Development process for specific clients.
    • Efficient on time delivery of program expectations with consistently high feedback.

Physical Requirements:

  • Light Carrying: Physical transporting items weighing less than 15 pounds from one location to another
  • Moderate Carrying: Items weighing 15 to 45 pounds
  • Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm
  • Light Lifting: Raising objects under 15 pounds from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from one position to another
  • Moderate Lifting: Objects 15-45 pounds
  • Sitting: Particularly for sustained periods of time
  • Standing: (.5 hours per day)
  • Visual Requirement: Enough to see and read PC screens
  • Hearing Requirement: Must be able to hold conversation with colleagues and customers

Mental Requirements:

  • Comprehension: Ability to understand, remember, and apply oral and/or written instructions, communicate routine/factual information, understand complex problems, and negotiate/integrate different viewpoints.
  • Organization: Ability to organize thoughts, ideas, and work schedule.
  • Reasoning and Decision Making: Ability to apply common sense and make decisions with moderate impact.
  • Communication: Ability to follow instructions, complete forms, compose reports/memoranda, communicate via telephone, and make presentations.
  • Mathematics: Ability to count, add, subtract, multiply, divide, and interpret numerical data.
