Head, Ophthalmology Precision Medicine, Medical Director (MD)

Roche is seeking a visionary leader to establish and direct a new Ophthalmology Precision Medicine group within Pharma Research & Early Development (pRED) at our Welwyn site. This role focuses on integrating biomarker science, advanced imaging, clinical expertise, and artificial intelligence to transform the detection and treatment of complex retinal diseases.

Responsibilities

• Build and lead a cross-functional team of experts in translational medicine, imaging, clinical development, data science, and biomarkers.
• Bridge laboratory science and clinical practice by developing robust fluid- and imaging-based biomarker strategies.
• Advance innovation in ophthalmic imaging technologies such as OCT, OCT-A, and FA.
• Utilize AI and data analytics to integrate preclinical and clinical datasets for translational insights.
• Influence portfolio strategy across retinal diseases including neovascular AMD, diabetic macular edema, and geographic atrophy.
• Represent Roche externally through partnerships with scientific experts and the broader ophthalmology community.

Requirements

• Board-certified ophthalmologist (MD or MD/PhD) with deep expertise in translational medicine or biomedical sciences.
• Recognized expert in the retina space with a strong scientific publication record.
• Extensive knowledge of ophthalmic imaging technologies and experience with imaging analysis or Reading Centre environments.
• Proven ability to integrate preclinical and clinical data to support drug development strategies.
• Collaborative leadership skills with experience thriving in matrix environments.
• Preferred: Experience with AI/machine learning in clinical data interpretation and prior experience in pharmaceutical drug development for retinal diseases.
