This is hard. TimeTac is a well-running organization, so this is more a collection of ideas than criticism: what I’ve had in other tech companies and enjoyed were: a performance-based bonus system, company equity, more home office days, a dedicated conference/training budget per employee/year, well-formulated career paths per role, working remotely from abroad 2–6 weeks a year, dedicated diversity/equity/inclusion mentoring programs to diversify the leadership team.

TimeTac is a genuinely great workplace. I don’t dread Mondays; I actually look forward to going to work. The products are interesting and my work is multifaceted.

You can learn a lot at TimeTac and grow in many ways: through communities of practice, exchange with colleagues, mentoring. TimeTac has a flat hierarchy; if you’re after loads of promotions in a short amount of time, a larger global tech company will serve this need better.

Salaries are fair within the Austrian market. It can‘t quite compare with international Silicon Valley tech salary standards, but the social system and infrastructure in Austria are good, so you don’t need to budget for private health care or even a car.

Waste is separated, printers aren’t overused, heating is used responsibly, food isn’t wasted. I’d also say it’s also a rather health-conscious company; sponsoring events like the Graz Business Run.

Newbies are welcomed open-heartedly through structured onboarding, including a buddy program. Team members and managers support each other. Breaks are spent together if you like. You can hear people having an occasional laugh in their offices. There are quarterly team events, rooftop gatherings etc. People also meet outside of work for darts, billiard, bouldering; you name it. Lasting friendships have formed at TimeTac; it’s a bunch of great people.

We’re a rather young team, which again is normal for tech companies. What’s interesting is that there are plenty of colleagues with a really long tenure (5+, 10+ years) at TimeTac, which really speaks for the company as an employer.

My manager gives me a great deal of trust, transparency and freedom, which is really all one can ask for. Obviously this depends on the manager, but generally speaking, leaders are decent humans with a good moral compass in addition to their skillset.

We’re supported in many ways: free equipment choice within a budget, daily food vouchers, a health budget, massages, a central office with a rooftop terrace, occasional paid lunches, team events etc.

It‘s fairly transparent what we’re working towards: TimeTac has an annual strategy and we get to set quarterly team OKRs. In a bi-weekly rhythm, there are company-wide business updates and teams can share insights. Remote and asynchronous communication is ever improving; we use Slack, Google Meet etc.

(As in many tech companies!) leadership isn’t yet as diverse as the wider team. The overall team, however, is very mixed: we’re from over 18 nations, different ages and social backgrounds.

The office is really the nicest one I've ever worked in. The offices in general are quite cozy and the office stands out because of the game room, a massage/relaxation room, and the terrace that overlooks Graz. You are also to choose the equipment of your choice when you start, although in a certain budget, and can renew it after three years, which I found to be a nice touch.
Work-Life-Balance
I would say it is quite good. If you are out of the office for the day or on vacation, you are not disturbed. There are times when it can become stressful, but compared to some other jobs I've had, overtime is not the norm.

There are many of initatives to progress in your career from trainings to appraisal reviews, to feedback sessions and internal development plans including mentoring. Compared to some other companies I've worked at this is more than I'm used to and I perceive personnel development to be important at TimeTac.

Colleagues get along really well. There are many team events, as well as self-organized activities within the team, such as the dart challenge or hiking trips. Many colleagues enjoy meeting after work for a beer on the terrace and the team is very open to welcoming new members.

In some offices on the 5th floor it tends to hot in the summer, although most of the offices have airconditioning. The meeting tools have been updated recently, which I found to be a nice improvement. Due to the team size, bringing your own dog is not allowed which I found somewhat disappointing.
Kommunikation
Communication is very open within the team. In general, open door policy is lived partice and you can approach anyone. In addition to that there are bi-weekly Business Brunches updating everyone on the latest news. On top of that there are company-wide Retros where everyone can ask questions. Latest developments are also shared within Slack with videos and presentations ensuring everyone can look it up if you missed something.

TimeTac is a very supportive company. You feel seen and heard. The fact that there are employees from all over the world is an incredible enrichment and makes working at TimeTac exceptional.

It's normal in any company that sometimes people are laid off. It is not a taboo subject and an even clearer and more appreciative approach regarding employee terminations would be desirable.
Also more remote work would be great (e.g. possibility to work remotely for consecutive weeks like a workation.)

It is important that team leaders also receive training in this area, and you can tell because you are encouraged and receive constructive feedback within the company.

Home office days two times a week is okay, but in 2023 this is no longer sufficient – especially when you are in the software industry.
The employment reference that I received after having worked for the company for more than 5 years did not meet basic requirements.
There is no real career path for employees who want to earn more money long term. If people want to earn significantly more, they either have to take over responsibility for a team/department or leave the company.
The management often declares that self-reflection is important for team leads, but does not question their own decisions and behavior.
The way very loyal colleagues, who had worked many years for the company, got dismissed is questionable and kind of respectless. If employees are dismissed, they are – in some cases – being treated like criminals and do not even get the chance to say goodbye to their colleagues.

The colleagues are friendly and supportive. Also, the team spirit is ok. However, the HR department often causes unrest and uncertainty among colleagues. I also witnessed several occasions where colleagues did not agree with management decisions but did not dare to speak up during company meetings because of fear of consequences. There were examples where they could see what would happen if they had a different opinion.

Overall great, but could be improved. The company has a rather strict understanding of home office. This is understandable and well explained, but also somewhat limits personal flexibility at times. However, exceptions are made for special occasions, such as doctor's appointments. In general this is a rather tricky topic and adjustments are difficult and it's probably impossible to make everyone happy.

Sometimes certain decisions could be communicated in more detail, especially when a colleague is let go. This does not happen very frequently, but when it does, it is not always comprehensible for everyone, especially those in other departments.
