My colleagues, the interesting work, the culture in the teams. I haven't seen a company where colleagues organize so many private events where they invite company colleagues (before corona). The leadership style and transparency of the new management had a big influence on Coya. It feel again we are working together as a big Coya family towards a clear vision. The output from all teams increased again and there are many good news again.

Last year there was a time when business was slow and atmosphere at a low. Layoffs took place, but also some good people and friends left the company then.

Office is nicely located, could be better. The new management could try to get some of the good people who left last year back to Coya.

There was a time of a mixed atmosphere after some changes in the company took place, but that turned out to be very positive. The new management is super empowering and keeps up a good mood and motivation. Today there is a way more transparent atmosphere than in the past. Today I clearly know where we are heading with Coya, what we are working towards and how I support this with my work.

Coyas image is still very positive when talking with friends. Due to the big investment rounds and famous investors Coya became quite famous, there were some mixed news in the past when business was slow, but currently there are a lot of positive mentionings again. This positive change is also in line with the atmosphere internally.

Quite good work life balance, at times it can get more intense when specific targets should be met on time. There can also be times where it's more relaxed again. The company is today absolutely focussed on the output, not on the time people are working, which I like.

Karriere/Weiterbildung

Various trainings are being offered as well as regular feedback talks to improve. There is a culture of continous learning.

Gehalt/Sozialleistungen

Pay pretty much in line with other successful Berlin startups from my experience. Further additional company perks are being offered.

Management is motivating their teams, giving clear focus and setting the targets together with their teams. I felt is was important for my manager that not just the company is developing well, but also I am learning and continously improving.

Arbeitsbedingungen

Tech equipment is good, everybody can get a Mac or a Surface. The office is located in Berlin-Kreuzberg on 2 floors - however the top floor can become quite hot in the summer and the basement floor is rather dark.

Kommunikation

I like the open and transparent communication from the top and also between the teams. Nobody is hiding something and issues are openly discussed. Everybody can openly give his or her opinion.

Interessante Aufgaben

Interesting work in the booming insurtech industry. I enjoy my tasks here, building up something new, often handle things the manual and easy startup way, as we were still developing. Due to the size of the overall company, it can be necessary to take over some other tasks once in a while, which can be very interesting or a bit boring.

Was macht dein Arbeitgeber in Corona-Zeiten gut?

Motivational top management is examplatory. Technology is awesome. Technical home office setup for all ready (but got limited to 1 day/week before Covid breakout...). Besides that, lately, the course of how things went in the tech team, there are really not many positive things.

Was macht dein Arbeitgeber in Corona-Zeiten nicht gut?

Strategic changes seem to be made without any (valid) consulting of the department/team in question. C-level management is too alike, there seem no productive controversy anymore (and it always seem that there was never a really productive one). Communication and transparency of situation and decisions is very filtered. Decisions that should be taken in one department seem to be taken by another department. Insurance people and tech folks are rather spreading more and more from each other than moving together. Showing real and valid career opportunities to people.

Was sollte dein Unternehmen in Corona-Zeiten (anders) machen?

A startup must be agile and change its focus/scope. However there should be some shades of grey and not only black&white solutions for as good as everything in the company. Management needs more transparency, again, it rather moves into top-down ruling and informing on their decisions. Finding the strategy that is really wanted to go with but talking to your people (it's still feasible, there are <60 left).

Usually friendly and fun relation to most people. However, continuous feeling of 1.5 years momentum of "we're on the edge of win or fail right now" followed by open announcements that "there was no real pressure yet..." does not yield in a truly positive atmosphere. Lately it felt like people were "recommended" to leave if they're not ready for the situation.

Fresh image of a new, digital, cool brand. Wearing the company hoody I've got recognised, positively recognised, several times when being off-line interacting with the products' target groups.

For a start-up, it's been fair - more work intense periods but usually no permanent very very late evening work, also eg Parental leave was to my understanding granted to all who requested but as it's a startup with very seldom equivalent backup for the responsibilities and tasks once on leave.

Karriere/Weiterbildung

Personal growth plan was rolled-out, stopped, re-initiated aka no constant plan... Very few people get promoted to positions with a real change (and stay much longer). In my entire time I was not able to join any external educational event like conferences (paid by the company) while business people seemed to constantly go to such.

Gehalt/Sozialleistungen

Salary in the tech team is rather below raising Berlin market prices. Also with a shadow shift that seem to aim on getting rather cheaper personal in other locations. For other departments, I am unaware of the salary level. Perks are regular pension schema, health app, regular (but increased) number of holidays, stock options (that seem only beneficial to the very first folks), nothing that substantially pops the payment.

Separation of garbage and a product features to donate parts of the revenue. Nothing extra-ordinary but more then regular.

Kollegenzusammenhalt

Speaking mostly for the Tech team, there is a strong feeling of helping and supporting each other - especially witting the older folks. However, when I left I had the feeling that the new management tries to split this feeling and shield newer people from it.

There is only one guys ~50 and very few 40+, I believe. However, these folks are treated like anyone else.

High expectations have been going with the company ever since, mostly top management and managers struggle to transfer this into positive actions except motivational speeches and public company representation. Strategic planning is reversed and adjusted too often, quarterly OKRs are forgotten once written, management is hick-jacking between complete laissez-faire and micro-management. From the beginning a lack of trust and respect from top management people (eg humiliation in all-hands meeting a la "Don't you all have no pride?!").

After moving into an office with natural sunlight, the environment became way better. Equipment has been great, especially for tech. However, there are rumours to ban Linux for dev... startup perks like drinks, fruits, breakfast bar.

Kommunikation

Struggling to get transparency into the company and the teams, especially in tech team a change of the management turned open, transparent communication into top-down micro-management.

Gleichberechtigung

In theory and communication highly equal employer, however my feeling was always that most male believe to be superior over their female counterparts. In general female lead positions are rather underrepresented in counting.

Interessante Aufgaben

In the past years building all from scratch was very interesting, very up-to-date technologies and stack, also insurance as a product is very complex and interesting. But it mainly depends on which area of responsibility you were assigned to.

Arbeitsatmosphäre

I really enjoy working here! Even though we are already more than 80 employees we still have a great start up culture and friendly and open minded colleagues.
There are also fun team events and summer/christmas parties happening with a lot of engagement and teambuilding.

Many applicants might be deterred by the bad reviews here & in Glassdoor but I think lately things changed a lot (management board shift and office move).
Since Coya is now also on the list "10 German startups to watch in 2019" the image is quite well!

My supervisor is always transparent an excellent mentor for me from whom I can learn a lot. I feel that even though I am still an intern I can shape processes and my opinion is valued very much. Also, I get a lot of responsibility to proof my strengths.
There was a shift in the management board, genuinely speaking I can not confirm the previous complaints about the management being non-start up. They are giving their best effort to motivate and pull the team together.

Arbeitsbedingungen

Coya reacted to the complaints concerning the rather dark office and moved to the second floor with much daylight and a big office. The rooms downstairs are now used as meeting rooms and a lounge area with table tennis and kicker.
However, it's an open-plan office and sometimes a bit noisy. Coya already try to fix problem with partition walls.

Kommunikation

There was a shift in the management board, genuinely speaking I can not confirm the previous complaints about the management being non-start up. They are giving their best effort to motivate and pull the team together.

I liked working with my younger colleagues a lot and spent also many evenings after work with my colleagues. However, how the company was led from the top reminded me very much of corporate practices and not really the startup way.

I think since the big investments into Coya the image is very good, playing in the league of the bigger startups. Just people ask me if the reviews on the net are really true in terms of being an interesting employer. As some things in the reviews are not accurate, I wanted to write this review.

Very good work life balance for a Berlin startup. Most people arrive at 9-10am and leave 5-7pm. No weekend work.

Wages are in line with other bigger Berlin startups, at least in my case. The compensation of others is not transparent. It's company policy that every employee gets some virtual share options and you can also get cheaper gym package.

Not using a lot of paper, buying fair trade coffee (I think). Also Coya just donated a larger amount to charity.

Kollegenzusammenhalt

Everybody is really helpful and supportive. A least in our team there is no blaming for not achieving our goals, but we analyze that causes the failure to be better next time. Continuous improvement is lived by most team at Coya.

Not many older colleagues, but the ones we have are treated like everybody else and fully integrated and respected.

I have a very good connection team head. We are aligned on my tasks and he appreciates my work, without mirco management. The management board sometimes try to micro management the teams heads and there were also cases, when the performance of teams shown bad by the management in company meetings. In general the management board tends to focus on talking about targets not being achieved and talking teams bad, instead of showing appreciation for successes. Might just be their way of working coming from traditional insurance companies.

Arbeitsbedingungen

Office is in the basement and a bit dark, but the office itself is quite nice and offers a lot of space. There are also always a couple of dogs around to cuddle with when a pause is needed.

Kommunikation

The Management Board at Coya is a guarantor for surprises. :-D Not in a startup way, but it's very hierarchical and not transparent. They think all decisions most come from the top and everything the management board says is the right way. But most decisions are taken by the Management Board only, without involvement of the teams. Then they invite very short notice for a meeting with all colleagues and present their decisions, often causing surprising faces in the teams, that directions are changed again or experts in the teams questioning the sense of the decisions being made without involvement of the teams. It's a bit chaotic and it's currently not really a leadership from the management board, as teams increasingly lost the believe in their orders. It feels that due to contradicting orders by different board members to the teams, which led to chaos before, the team leads now increasingly organize and align themselves across the teams, which works much better than following orders from the top.

is good in general, sometimes hard to find the right balance between too much information and sometimes too little. I could see improvements though lately.

- i learned a lot during my internship at Coya and would not want to miss the experience
- nice and helpful mentors
- friendly, relaxed "family"-atmosphere
- fun team events, like the welcome events or cultural brunches
- great office location (right near paul-lincke ufer with many good lunch options around)
- interesting & challenging tasks
- learning sessions/workshops
- flexible working times
- and last but not least: joey (the cutest office dog ever!)

Schlecht am Arbeitgeber finde ich

- one downside for me is that the office is rather dark and cold unless it's summer
- sometimes a bit loud since it's a shared office (however, there are enough quiet places you can escape to)

However, our diligent Office Manager is constantly trying to improve the situation e.g. by buying extra lamps to lighten up your experience even more. And if it still gets a little too dark for you sometimes, just step outside for a bit and take a walk along the canal right near our office in the beautiful area of Kreuzberg.

Etwas hellere Büros wären im Winter schöner, zumindest vereinzelt wären Einzelbüros wünschenswert weil die Lautstärke im Großraumbüro die Konzentration leiden lassen kann.

Gerade im Aufbaubereich eines Start-ups sind Kapazitätsengpässe aufgrund begrenzter Ressourcen unvermeidlich, vereinzelt wären mehr Ressourcen wünschenswert.
