Especially at the Siegen site, I repeatedly experienced comments about international and non-German employees that I found highly concerning. In particular, comments were made about Indian colleagues along the lines of: “We already have enough of them; we don’t need more.”
I also witnessed inappropriate remarks directed at a Black colleague from the HR team. Even people in management positions made comments presented as “jokes,” such as “Smile, otherwise I can’t see you” or “Turn the light on so I can see you.”
In the Supply Chain area, I also heard statements that the company needed “real German employees” rather than more people from abroad who supposedly “don’t know how to work properly.”
What makes this particularly disappointing is the gap between the external image and what I experienced internally. The company publicly presents itself as an international organization with employees from around 30 different nationalities. That diversity certainly exists on paper. However, particularly at the Siegen site, my experience was that international colleagues were not always met with the same openness and respect that the company’s external image suggests.
For an international deep-tech company that depends on attracting highly qualified people from around the world, this is a serious cultural issue. Diversity should be more than a number used in employer branding. It has to be reflected in everyday behavior, leadership and the way colleagues actually treat each other. Competence, performance and collaboration should matter — not someone’s passport, nationality or background.
The company structure is honestly very frustrating. Nobody really seems to know who is responsible for what, and decisions can change depending on who you speak to. Something can be agreed today and questioned again tomorrow.
There are too many discussions, too much internal politics and not enough clear decisions. Management gets involved in small operational topics while important bigger issues remain unresolved. Sometimes it feels like everyone is running in different directions.
The culture is also very different from how the company presents itself externally. From the outside it looks modern, international and open. Inside, especially in Siegen, it can feel very different. There are good people and good colleagues, but also clear groups, different treatment of people and a lot of frustration.
The biggest problem for me is that the company has grown, but the way it is managed has not grown with it. It still often feels like a small research organisation trying to operate as a much bigger company.
There is a lot of potential here, but everyday work is made much harder than it needs to be because of unclear structures, changing decisions and the way people are managed.
Salary is good for the work what we do. Also no one cares if you work only 3h or 8h as the management has no idea how to lead by example.
The working environment in Siegen feels neglected. A lot of the office furniture is old and was apparently bought second-hand from companies that closed down. At the same time, C-level offices have modern height-adjustable desks, while many employees work with old desks and chairs. It creates a strange impression about priorities.
Even basic things are an issue. The coffee machine has been broken for weeks. At one point the CEO decided to lock the kitchen because it was not clean enough. Employees could no longer simply use the kitchen to eat or get a drink and had to ask him personally for the key. For me, this felt more like a power trip than a reasonable solution to a cleanliness problem.
Overall, the offices have very little atmosphere or attention to detail. For a company presenting itself as a modern, well-funded deep-tech company, the actual working environment feels surprisingly basic and without much care for the people working there every day.
Multicultural, just-outgrown-startup with a sort of "Big Bang Theory nerdiness". I felt immediately at home with the people.
Trying to be and do everything everywhere all at once.
The atmosphere has changed as the company has grown, naturally becoming more impersonal. There are currently positive and negative aspects, which I feel balance out to neutral at the moment.
Working hours are highly flexible, which is a significant advantage when it comes to arranging personal appointments or commuting via public transportation.
Unfortunately, I have repeatedly experienced peaks of activity where everything comes together all at once and I have no choice but to work beyond regular hours in order to meet expectations and deadlines. At the same time, I believe those peaks would be avoidable with some organizational changes.
When I first started working here several years ago, everyone was close, and we regularly did things outside of work together as friends. The company has been growing rapidly, so now I do not know all my colleagues personally. Most people are kind, polite and helpful though, with only few exceptions.
I have rarely encountered senior leaders who are as kind, humorous, and approachable as those in this organization. They create an atmosphere in which I have always felt at ease and able to speak my mind.
Looking ahead, one of the key challenges may be avoiding the feeling Bilbo Baggins described of being stretched thin, "like butter scraped over too much bread". As the organization grows and new demands emerge, maintaining focus and ensuring that time and energy are not spread across too many competing priorities will be important for sustaining both effectiveness and employee well-being.
Senior management makes regular efforts to communicate important updates on a company-wide scale. I love the fact that communication happens in an informal, friendly way. However, management's decision-making style is quick and often spontaneous, which can generate challenges.
I do appreciate the very unbeaurocratic way of doing things.
Generally, the field of quantum computing is one of the most interesting ones out there. Personally, my tasks are often repetitive and not very engaging. But this is not the norm in the company.
Hire and Fire, Great Resignation
Katastrophal
Keine ergonomisch gerechten Büromöbel. Sie sind auch größtenteils alt und kaputt. Keine höhenverstellbarer Schreibtische.
Ist soweit ok.
Leider nicht vorhanden.
Sehr interessantes Thema.
* The entire hiring process was clearly explained and well-structured, with strong support from the TA team throughout the recruitment process.
* Smooth onboarding experience with good guidance and support from the HR team.
* Very supportive teammates and approachable team leads.
* Overall work culture is positive, collaborative, and relaxed.
* In my case, the hiring process took a bit longer (around 2 months), possibly due to the Christmas break period, which extended the timeline.
positive, collaborative, and relaxed.
verz supportive team
approachable team leads
Gesundheit und Family first! Auch die Vorgesetzten leben das aktiv vor.
Ausreichend gute Technikausstattung, helle Offices, zT Höhenverstellbare Tische
