A workplace culture driven heavily by pressure, testing, and image management rather than sustainable educational practice. Poor communication, low transparency, limited trust in leadership, and insufficient support for both teachers and students created an environment that felt exhausting and professionally discouraging over time.
In my experience, staff wellbeing, SEN support, and meaningful professional development were not prioritized strongly enough, while workloads and expectations remained extremely high.
Reduce the culture of constant pressure and over-assessment, and place greater emphasis on sustainable educational practice and staff wellbeing. Invest meaningfully in SEN support, transparent communication, professional development, and competitive salaries in order to retain experienced teachers.
Leadership would also benefit from building a more open and professional culture where staff feedback is genuinely welcomed rather than discouraged. Rebuilding trust, improving morale, and prioritizing healthy working conditions should be treated as long-term priorities rather than secondary concerns.
The overall atmosphere was highly pressured and, in my experience, emotionally exhausting over time. There was a constant emphasis on performance, testing, and maintaining results, which created significant stress for both staff and students.
While many colleagues were supportive on a personal level, the wider environment often felt tense and competitive rather than collaborative. Staff frequently appeared overworked, and burnout did not seem uncommon. Constructive criticism or concerns about workload and student support were not always received openly, which contributed to low morale among many employees.
Work-life balance was very poor. The workload and constant pressure to maintain academic performance often extended far beyond normal working hours. Frequent assessments, administrative demands, and high expectations made it difficult to disconnect from work or maintain a healthy balance long term.
In my experience, overwork became normalized within the culture, and burnout risk was extremely high. Staff wellbeing did not appear to be prioritized in a meaningful or sustainable way.
Career development and further education opportunities were limited and lacked transparency. Professional development was not supported in a consistent or structured way, and teachers often had to advocate strongly for training opportunities themselves.
In my experience, there was little meaningful long-term investment in staff growth, which made it difficult to develop professionally within the organization.
Salary and benefits were not competitive compared to other international schools in the region. In my experience, compensation appeared significantly lower than surrounding schools despite the workload, pressure, and expectations placed on staff.
Given the intensity of the working environment and the high demands placed on teachers, the overall compensation package did not feel proportionate to the responsibilities required.
In my experience, social awareness and institutional responsibility were not strong areas of the school culture. Support structures and visible protections for LGBTQ+ students did not feel sufficiently developed or actively reinforced, which was disappointing in an international school environment that promotes inclusivity.
Environmental responsibility also appeared to receive little practical attention. Despite messaging around sustainability, there did not seem to be meaningful recycling systems or consistent environmental practices implemented in day-to-day operations.
Team spirit was generally low during my time at the school. While many colleagues supported each other on a personal level, the wider culture was affected by low morale, constant pressure, and limited trust between staff and leadership.
In my experience, communication and decision-making were not transparent enough to build a strong sense of unity or shared purpose. This often created frustration, disengagement, and an atmosphere where staff felt undervalued rather than genuinely supported. Over time, the pressure and lack of trust appeared to contribute to exhaustion and burnout among many employees.
In my experience, leadership behavior often felt defensive and lacking in professionalism. Concerns raised by staff were not always handled constructively, and there was a strong sense that protecting management decisions and the school’s image took priority over open dialogue or genuine reflection.
The leadership culture could at times feel petty and unsupportive, which contributed to low trust and poor morale among staff. Rather than encouraging collaboration and transparency, the environment often created anxiety around speaking openly or raising legitimate concerns.
Working conditions were challenging due to the combination of large class sizes, constant assessment demands, high workload expectations, and limited structural support for both staff and students. Teachers were often expected to manage increasingly complex classroom situations without sufficient resources, training, or specialist assistance.
In my experience, the overall environment was physically and emotionally draining over time, and sustainable long-term working conditions did not appear to be a priority.
Communication was one of the weakest aspects of the workplace culture. Important decisions, expectations, and changes were often not communicated clearly or transparently to staff. This created confusion, inconsistency, and unnecessary stress across departments.
Because reliable communication channels were lacking, information frequently spread informally through staff gossip and speculation rather than through professional leadership structures. In my experience, this contributed to low trust, poor morale, and a feeling that many employees were left uninformed about decisions directly affecting their work.
In my experience, equality and fairness within the workplace were inconsistent. Recognition, opportunities, and support did not always appear to be distributed transparently or based purely on professional merit.
This contributed to frustration among staff and reinforced the perception that some employees were valued more highly than others without clear or objective reasons.
Opportunities for meaningful professional growth or innovative work were limited. In my experience, staff were generally expected to remain strictly within predefined roles rather than contribute creatively or develop new initiatives.
New ideas or alternative approaches did not always feel encouraged, which made the work environment feel rigid and professionally limiting over time.
