Meist tolle, gut ausgebildete Kollegen.
An exciting project; great engineers; good hardware; modern technology stack. If you can focus 100% on your technical excellence within predefined constraints, be prepared to work really hard, and ignore any stress, this may be the right company for you.
High turnover; high stress level; tendency towards overtime.
Well, you have your own way, and it seems to work for some people. I wish you to find more of such people with lower turnover rate.
Atmosphere suffers from occasional loud arguments, high turnover, and the secrecy when someone is leaving and you often never hear until the day that happens. Otherwise, the daily working atmosphere is okay.
The company has a poor image because of high turnover and taking too long to release the product. Keep in mind that people complaining online are not necessarily representative of the average.
"We work harder than the rest" is the official position. Expect to spend extra hours. On a few occasions, there were also poorly justified denied vacation requests.
The company will pay for events and trainings which you can justify, and for any books you need. Regarding career opportunities, the structure is mostly flat, and senior positions most often require long-time loyalty, so be patient.
I met some of the smartest engineers here, and made some friends as well.
Senior people are actually treated with the greatest respect here.
The boss is very demanding both with himself and with others. That may sound fair, but it is more natural to put in 200% effort for the main beneficiary than for a salaried employee. Also it often takes an overwhelming amount of evidence to prove your ideas when they differ from the bosses, to a point that many people give up and either shut up or leave. This trickles down through middle managers as well, because they don't want to get into lengthy arguments too often, either. At least you can be certain your boss is not dumb, and if you can stand the pressure, it will make you stronger.
Rooms in Berlin are okay; in Hamburg many developers share a big room that has a lot of space, but some people may not like this setting. If you need any improvement to your computer, normally you can just ask and get it quickly.
Communication about requirements and implementation tends to lean heavily in one direction (downwards). Communication of changes in staff is poor.
The salary scale seems fair, and stock options are common.
As an engineer, the project is interesting but you don't have as much freedom in decisions as you may expect from other startups. There is also an idea of code ownership, so expect to specialize in a few sections of the project, rather than try a bit of everything.
The atmosphere is very tense due to the management by fear. People get sick a lot because the pressure results in health problems. Also employees are not supposed to voice their opinion. They even risk to get fired if they raise concerns about aspects of the strategy or implementation.
Since the employee turnover is very, very high the image of the company is not very good. Employees would never recommend their friends to work there. Also, it has been founded in 2009 and there's no product launched yet. Even a company website is missing so far.
The working time is not flexible which is very uncommon for a startup company. When you want to take time off you have to beg for holidays despite all the hard work and the overtime you've already dedicated to the company.
The best thing about this company is that the colleagues all suffer together.
The (non-technical) managers create lots of unnecessary pressure, they tend to push things and it happens all the time that once something is finished the requirements will be changed all of a sudden so that the engineers can start from the beginning which is very annoying. There's also a strong culture of micro-managing.
The office is centrally located, there are lots of restaurants to go for lunch. The office space itself is ok, altthough there are not enough restrooms. For engineers they do not offer quiet working conditions. Most of the engineers sit in one big room which is always noisy.
The communication is top-down and very harsh. The management does not want the staff's opinion and criticism - only if it's in line with the top-down comunication. If people resign they will be bashed by the management and their achievements will be negated even if they have been hard-working and committed employees.
The nature of the tasks might be interesting but the fact that the engineers mostly cannot make the technical decisions (the non-technical managers will do that for them) puts them off the task.
