CEO/Management communicates strategic goals transparently. The broader vision is solid, and the industry itself is fast-moving and full of opportunities. The teams on the ground — especially engineers, designers, and product managers — are highly capable and genuinely want to build something meaningful. When collaboration happens at the execution level, it’s often the best part of working here.
While senior management has clear revenue-focused goals, the second tier of leadership is where things start to fall apart. Many mid-level leaders are more focused on internal politics and self-preservation than on driving the business forward.
Instead of taking ownership of their areas, second-tier leaders push full accountability down to Engineering Managers (EMs) and Product Managers (PMs), often without the necessary support or authority to meet these expectations. In many cases, these leaders set unrealistic and unreasonable goals, only to use them as a justification to hold EMs and PMs accountable (or fire them) when things inevitably go wrong. This creates a toxic, blame-focused culture that undermines team morale.
Product departments work in silos with minimal communication, leading to fragmented decision-making and a disjointed user experience. The lack of cross-functional collaboration makes it difficult to align on goals or execute at scale, which impacts both product quality and user satisfaction.
Additionally, the company seems to be embracing a hire-and-fire approach, citing market conditions as the justification. This is detrimental to employee trust and creates a sense of instability that makes it harder to retain talent.
Build real accountability at the second leadership layer — stop pushing responsibility downward.
Encourage collaboration across departments to eliminate silos.
Support EMs and PMs with authority that matches their responsibility.
Focus more on long-term product quality and user experience instead of just short-term targets.
Prioritize stability and people retention to maintain momentum and morale.
