- Decent wages
- Free coffee, water, fruits, gym
- Friendly co-workers
- No work-life-balance at all!
- Poor on-boarding
- Lack of business trainings & leadership
- High fluctuation - therefore, no major learnings possible
- No structures / processes / standards – do your work, no matter how
Overall, I regret to say that after having worked for several FMCG companies and being able to compare the business environment in this sector, SC Johnson offers minor benefits compared to other players, making it to the end of the list in terms of employee satisfaction. Better choices in this region might be: Teekanne, Alpro, L’Oreal, Katjes, or Henkel.
The above mentioned problems were regularly addressed to local HR, but consequently ignored.
If you are looking for a company, with structures and sustainable growth for you to join in long-term, SC Johnson might not be your primary choice. Unfortunately, there are several issues within this company, of which external people – particularly applicants – should be informed.
I was fooled by the “Best Workplace” award the company holds. Due to the high fluctuation the award’s rating mainly contains the untouched opinions of newer employees.
There is a problem with the so-called “trust-based working time”. Every employee is empowered to decide at what time to start and finish work, as well as when to make use of home office – in theory! Reality looks quite different: some divisions work to an extreme level and when you propose to work a day from home you need to have strong arguments why this is really needed. The beneficiary party of this system is, of course, the employer. Bottom line: you work more than officially regulated in your contract and you cannot do anything about it.
In order to develop your career successfully you are expected to work for a SCJ subsidiary in a foreign country for some years – often Switzerland. This is not necessarily a negative point, but this sort of policy might put pressure on employees who do not want to relocate, still want to keep developing. If you are not willing to cooperate and relocate, you are often regarded as inappropriate for the fast moving consumer business.
Moreover, there is an extreme lack of employee training and investment in people. If the rare case of a training arises, it often reflects an internal training and exchange of employees, instead of a proper qualified trainer teaching teams.
One of the few positive points to mention: decent wage, pension plan (after three years of employment) free water, fruits, coffee and gym
Fair and respectable senior colleagues.
Props to them.
There is a high chance for you to be fired during your probation time, since this phenomenon occurred extremely often recently.
Senior Management is regularly exchanged and fired, because they eventually become “too expensive”. Clear and open communication is unfortunately not always provided.
Female and men are challenged and promoted equally.
However, while in Sales work mostly men, in Marketing are more female employed.
Although there are some Marketing functions located in Erkrath, there is no proper Marketing team, as it is in Switzerland. As a Marketeer in Germany your sole function is to operate and implement the strategic orders from the European HQ.
Kein Marketing, sondern Projektmanagment.
