Quite good and flexible remote work arrangements.
Random HR policy changes to remove chance for promotion and salary increase. No bonuses even if exceeding targets.
Very little communication about key topics impacting company. Seniors rarely talk to other members of the organisation - strong heirarchy.
Seems that you have to know the right people to progress in this company. Performance not considered when allocating raises, promotions.
No clear strategy so hard to stay engages in projects.
Work-life balance is good for a start-up.
No open communication in C-level.
If the backstapping culture doesn't stop I will search for a new employer like so many others did before me. Since the C-level changed, it's all about saving money. So if there is a chance to replace someone with someone cheaper, it seems to be taken. Strange though because we lost so much knowledge because of it that it is really not efficient at all. Unfortunately you can not even say something because since HR was basically replaced, there is (almost) no open ear for improvement. Element has a lot of amazing people working here. It is a shame that the culture is destroyed by some... I would really hope that this changes again. You can see many people trying to fight the culture change but since it's quite top-down now I doubt that it will happen.
Backstapping...since our C level was switched everything changed...People at all level start to talk behind other's back.
This point I can not complain about
No free taining budget everything needs to be approved. But I heard it gets approved okish if it's not too expensive
Depends. Can be truely great, can be bad, really depends on where you are working
We basically don't have any anymore...But we are a start-up so there were never a lot of them
It depends. This is hard to generalize. There are manager who would do everything for their team, and there are manager who only care about themselves. But that's my experience in every company so far
Homeoffice is possible. The office is beautiful and has the usual snacks although the fruits were a bit more plenty in the old times. There are not enough meeting rooms though. The kitchen is well equiped, you could even cook there.
It used to be very open, but since the backstapping is socially accepted I would say this is not great
Average salary, not many benefits compared to a cooperate
Certainly more interesting than in other companies. Since we are a scale-up this became a bit less interesting but there are still plenty of interesting things to learn
still digital
ELEMENT completely lost USP
focus on business and market, focus on former USP
bad, pressure only
now bad, coming from very good
not existing
not existing
bad, below average
not existing
fight club
worst
pressure only, too many "leaders" for such a small company
worrst
not happening
no
lat year interesting - now boring
Keine Kernarbeitszeit, Home Office
Fehlende Wertschätzung
Fluktuation ernst nehmen
In Ordnung
Es wird sich engagiert
I.O., aber teamübergreifend schwierig.
There is a steep learning curve and still a lot of willingness to try out new things or do things differently.
Top line is our god.
Be realistic and transparent, at least internally. Listen and take up employee's suggestions in a professional manner.
Open communication on a daily level; identification could be better as suspicous partnerships (decisions by sharia board such as rejecting LGBTQ; excessive commissions; insurances that nobody needs or do support harming environment ...) are pursued regardless of serious critizism
Outside image is overall still good, but quite some turnover from people with deeper insight over the last 12 months.
Sometimes extreme due to typcial startup culture (e.g. surprises are intentionally not always incorporated in planning: expectation to work beyond) and increased staff turnover
On own initiative; time budget for development is typcially not incorporated in daily business, and expense cutting also applies to education budgets.
Salaries are comparable with other Berlin-based startups, but not beyond. Monetary benefits are poor. Company events have become victims of expenses cutting. Other non-monetary benefits are good.
Good on micro level, but overall ESG seems mainly for marketing reasons than part of the DNA.
Excellent
Unclear wether it is mainly push or mainly pull that a number of them left
Much more top-down then then it used to be
Open space that is usually quiet while also providing extra-areas to fully focus or have conversations and regular or spontanous meetings; home office quite flexible but mostly at your own expense and responsibility
Top management frequently uses almost brainwashing-like approaches; there are less updates on financials or employee-enagagement then it used to be (in time with company goals not being met for a while and then restructuring); anonymous questions are not shared anymore but rephrased (up to sometimes making them appear foolish to the whole audience) so people may less dare to ask
Mostly male white German speakers seem to make it to leadership level
As most of the business innovation is rather kept outside with the partners, certain tasks are less interesting after a while as compared to other insuretechs with specialized business model or larger players. As with other startups, the need to rather support short-term topline than a company that is to exist and run a business with a long-term view may also take its toll.
Great team to work with.
Very flexible (e.g., home-office etc)
Very open, to-the-point
This is really about the future of insurance!
Auf Arbeitsebene meist gut, Top-Down eher mies.
Salary and a few colleagues
Everything else.
Start disciplining employees who make racist and sexist remarks, hire more women, implement some sort of performance-based compensation, fire employees who don't take ownership, diversify your board, bring dynamism and energy to the company, create a sense of urgency around the company mission and cause.
If you join looking for a dynamic and agile startup, you'll be bitterly disappointed. There's a very anachronistic feel to the place: employees don't take any ownership for their work, most only do the bare minimum and nothing else, no one wants to make any decisions because they don't want to have to deal with the fallout in case things go wrong, people are quick to point out what's not on their job description, but very slow to get anything done. There's zero accountability, plenty of people just ignore their tasks without having to give any explanations as to why they couldn't get them done within schedule. It's such a demotivating atmosphere to work in, even if you come in ambitious and driven, in a couple of months you're really beaten down by this perpetual inertia that surrounds you. It's the furthest a company that's only 3 years old could be from being an agile startup.
They seem to have a really great image, well-known brands often reach out to ELEMENT to forge partnerships.
Most people arrive just before 9h and leave around 18h, so generally speaking the hours are OK. Depending on your manager, however, you might have to work way more than that. And there's no flexibility in working hours, the feeling you get is that you have to be there 8:30/9h to 18h, otherwise you can't be doing a decent job.
There's a yearly training and development budget for every employee and there seemed to be regularly scheduled talks regarding employee development but the path for career progression within the firm appeared quite murky.
I think most people were/are quite well paid because the company is very well funded. For startup standards ELEMENT definitely pays well above average.
Not really a topic that ever came up during my time at the company so not great.
Lots of office politics, gossiping, a toxic environment that made it pretty hard to make friends.
Hard to get along with people socially when you can't get along with them professionally, and definitely hard to get along with people who are constantly making racist and/or sexist remarks that they see no problem with.
Could vary a lot depending on your manager. Overall I would say good managers were the exception, not the rule.
You can choose your equipment, you can request extra equipment if you need, there's no real constraint set.
Awful, really. Leadership team was often extremely rude to employees, it seemed to be acceptable for managers to speak using disrespectful and inappropriate language. There were plenty of things decided behind closed doors, there were racist and mysoginistic jokes going around, really deplorable internal communication.
Grand majority of the company is male, most managers are also male, the environment is so openly sexist that men will make the most outrageously mysoginistic remarks in public, without any concern. Women clearly have a lower status within the company, and they do most of the cliché female work e.g. the all-male all-German all-white all-middle-aged board had an all-female team of secretaries. Most of the company is also German, so non-native German speakers are as well at a disadvantage, specially if they work outside of the IT department (IT is where most non-German speakers work).
Also varied depending on the position and the department, I think, but overall there was quite a bit of manual work to be done, even though if you were to believe management then the company was constantly automating everything possible and imaginable.
It's a fintech startup, so we are one of the few new cool kids on the block
- Breakfast, vegetables, fruit and provided as well as beverages
- Clearly very experienced management with vast insights into their respective fields
- Good office location near Zoologischer Garden with many choices for lunch
- Very low fluctuation
Well, the open space office is not ideal ...
- Great culture, very much inspired by typical tech startup. Using modern tools and methodologies
- Almost exclusively highly motivated, highly skilled colleagues
- Flexible workplace arrangements also for colleagues with kids
There's a personal training budget for each employee, not much questions aked. But training itself is not so much organized, so everyone has to figure out what they need
Company clearly focusing on acquiring and retaining top talent. Also, it's fast growing in numbers allowing for quick personal and career development
Not aware of any specific actions here
- Overall respectful colleagues, lots of interactions between departments which is working rather well
- Regular company, office and team events (breakfasts, lunches, dinners, parties) helped build great teams
I don't feel like there's much difference in behavior based on age
Rather flat hierarchies, management very accessible
Open space office not always ideal. Otherwise good equipment, also allowing for special requests
Not sure about the exact numbers, but many female "Head Of ...." and CTO
Although being an insurance company, it really is a tech company. While insurance know how is somehow required, it can be acquired on work. The rather new business model is attracting many very different business partners requiring lots of creativity
So verdient kununu Geld.
