Employees were generally treated like responsible adults who could manage their own time as long as their work was done well.
Without the “right” degree or a particularly confident appearance, there was sometimes the impression of not being taken as seriously.
The existing expertise and experience of many employees could be more strongly incorporated into strategic decisions and long-term planning.
It often felt like you constantly had to prove yourself. Good work was appreciated, but there seemed to be little understanding that quality also requires time. In addition, employees were regularly assigned projects or extra tasks whose long-term value wasn't always clear.
Internationally, ESMT appears to have a fairly strong reputation, especially on an academic level. However, I sometimes felt that internal issues were overlooked because of the anticipation of upcoming events or projects.
This depended heavily on the department. In my case, the work-life balance was fairly good. Vacation planning was relatively flexible, although this flexibility did not seem to apply equally to everyone.
Yes, there are examples of successful career progression. However, in some cases it wasn't clear how performance was linked to promotion. In addition, the hierarchy itself sometimes left little room for further growth.
Most colleagues were the greatest to work with. Collaboration was enjoyable, people supported one another, and there was a strong willingness to learn from each other. At the same time, it felt like the culture had become increasingly competitive over the years.
As far as I could tell, older colleagues were not particularly valued. There were some symbolic-looking benefits, but long-term experience and professional expertise often did not seem to carry significantly more weight.
Many decisions were difficult to understand from both a professional and business perspective. Employees were sometimes excluded from processes they had previously been involved in. In addition, contradictory information was occasionally communicated. From my perspective, recurring problematic behaviors were rarely really addressed. At times it felt like certain individuals were treated more favorably.
When tasks regularly required resources outside the standard setup — for example, increased computing power — solutions were often not provided. Workspaces were supposed to be flexibly booked through a desk reservation system. In practice, many desks were de facto permanently assigned to specific people.
There were many meetings and coordination rounds, but I often wasn't clear on why certain tasks were prioritized. This sometimes created uncertainty about your own role and the company’s long-term direction. New responsibilities were frequently assigned without sufficient handover or documentation.
Salary payments were reliable and always on time, but overall compensation was below the industry average. Additional perks like discounts were well intentioned, but didn't really add much value.
In day-to-day work, there was generally a sense of equal treatment, or at least a genuine effort toward it. However, looking at the upper management level, there were no women represented.
My core responsibilities were genuinely interesting. Unfortunately, it often felt like that reliable and high-performing employees were “rewarded” with even more work. Additional projects were given clear goals, but their results frequently lost relevance shortly after completion.
Work-life balance, flexibility.
Honestly, everything else.
Practice what you preach.
There is a clear gap between what the company promotes and how it actually operates internally.
Frustration has escalated to the point where colleagues are beginning to turn against each other.
all foam, no beer.
It would actually be a pretty good, if these issues didn’t exist.
If you are looking for an employer where you can truly develop yourself, this is the wrong place.
Even by Berlin standards, the pay is poor and there is no transparency around compensation. Instead of addressing these issues, the company seems to distract employees with constant community activities and events.
Misery loves company.
It’s hard to understand how the company consults others when its own internal culture and employee satisfaction have been deteriorating for years.
People within the company often joke that the ‘T’ in ESMT is silent for a reason.
There is very poor communication with employees, combined with a complete lack of salary transparency.
Sehr gute Autonomie in meinem Team.
pay your employees better/more appropriately/competitively against the market, and create a better environment for more conversations to be had about salary/personal growth/development
Great working atmosphere, supportive colleagues, and interesting tasks. I like going to the office which is worth a lot!
Lacking transparency when it comes to salary and restricted career progression opportunities.
1. A clear and transparent salary structure and system for salary increase
2. Streamlining promotion processes and titles: why do some departments have senior titles while others don't? It creates the feeling that some departments are valued higher than others.
The colleagues make the great working atmosphere!
working overtime is a rare occasion luckily, and my manager always made sure that I regularly plan to take time off.
In my role/department there are no promotions - no senior titles are available which I am not sure why.
On the brighter side, there are plenty of offerings for personal development and soft skills, which I appreciate.
Comparing my salary with the one of friends in similar positions and with similar backgrounds, it is clear that I earn way less. There is no transparency on how budget for salary increase is being built - a new performance based system was recently introduced, but so far the communication around it has been very poor.
The community is amazing! People are very supportive, collaborative and kind.
really supportive and empathetic
I feel that there is a lack of transparency (e.g. salary structure and general decision making), but they are working on it!
The colleagues in ESMT are an international bunch who are super friendly and warm. Going to work is a fun event to look forward to. Working hours are flexible, especially if you run programs. Good work life balance.
existence of hierarchy in the company, between faculty and other staff.
Salaries are not competitive for program manager level, compared to other companies. No yearly salary increments guaranteed. No year end bonus either. No career progression for program managers.
faires Gehalt, sehr viele Benefits, Gehalt kam immer super pünktlich.
Trust-based working environment. Increases loyalty and fun.
Intransparent salary scheme
Transparency over salaries by departments and seniority as clear indicator and guideline visible for all. No gender pay gap obviously.
Working at ESMT is a joy - mostly because there is more trust than control and control only when really important and meaningful
Very gods image, nation-wide as well as internationally
Allowed to work from home 2-3 days a week (or more if transparently communicated). Little control, much trust on being one’s own master of being on top of the responsibilities and to dos
Many options for further education, also in house. Career advancement options within the company are somewhat limited - it’s still a relatively small company
In my profession the payment is not competitive with other companies. But there are efforts to improve this.
The school is continuously working to improve its CO2 footprint. We have the largest roof-top solar panel system of Berlin. There are efforts to decrease printing as well as other unnecessary waste
In general relationships amongst colleagues are friendly and fair.
Generally good as far as I can judge
Reliable, transparent, open to critical discussion, team- oriented
Good working conditions, overhours can be compensated with free-time. Offices, Office Location and travel time very good
Communication in my department is
open, trustful and transparent
Generally good - only thing: no transparency over salary equalization
Some routine work- like anywhere- but also openness to explore own fields of interest that can benefit the company
In meiner Abteilung meistens gute Kommunikation.
Gute Arbeitsplatzausstattung, Vertrauen.
Sehr hierarchisch insgesamt.
Konnte immer pünktlich Feierabend machen; Urlaub nehmen erfordert kleine Absprachen.
