University Professorship at KIT (W3) 'Mathematics“ (f/m/d)
Einleitung
Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach (MFO) jointly invite applications for a W3 Professorship in Mathematics (Berliner Modell). The Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach (MFO, Oberwolfach Research Institute for Mathematics) is an international research centre situated in the German Black Forest. Leading experts from all over the world meet at the Institute in order to pursue their research activities, to discuss recent developments in their field, and to generate new ideas. The Institute is a member of the Leibniz Association and is funded jointly by the German federal government and the state governments.
Aufgaben
You represent a current field of mathematics at the highest international level.
At KIT (50 %) you
- strengthen and complement the research profile of the KIT-Department of Mathematics,
- teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Mathematics,
- supervise Bachelor’s, Master’s and doctoral theses and support the development of early-career researchers,
- contribute to the service responsibilities of the KIT-Department and participate in academic self-governance, and
- fulfil general university responsibilities including a teaching load of 4.5 hours per week during the semester (4.5 SWS).
At MFO (50 %) you
- provide scientific leadership and assume responsibility for the internationally renowned research programme of MFO, including its weekly international workshops, mini-workshops, and “Arbeitsgemeinschaften”, as well as, together with the Deputy Director, the scientific oversight of the seminars for early-career researchers, the Oberwolfach Research Fellows programme, and the Leibniz Fellows programme,
- provide strategic leadership and further develop the institute as a leading international centre for mathematical research and scientific exchange, and
- represent MFO externally through committee and advisory work, conduct negotiations with funding bodies (the Leibniz Association, the German Federal Government, and the German federal states, in particular the State of Baden-Württemberg), and work closely with the Executive Board of the Gesellschaft für Mathematische Forschung e.V. (GMF).
Profil
For appointment at KIT, you are expected to have:
- an outstanding doctoral degree, an internationally recognised record of excellent research achievements (habilitation or equivalent qualification), a strong track record in acquiring competitive third-party funding, and demonstrated excellence in teaching , and
- the ability and willingness to teach in German in the Bachelor’s degree programme within a reasonable timeframe.
The leadership of MFO requires:
- in addition to the scientific excellence and outstanding international reputation described above, a broad perspective across the full spectrum of mathematics,
- strong leadership skills, demonstrated through the successful management of research groups, institutions, or committees, as well as proven administrative experience and the ability to lead and moderate in an international environment, and
- full professional proficiency in English and German (or, alternatively, a willingness to acquire German language proficiency to this level within a reasonable period) in order to represent the institute effectively in national and international bodies.
Employment is subject to Art. 14, par. (2) of the KIT Act in conjunction with Art. 47 LHG Baden-Württemberg (Act of Baden-Württemberg on Universities and Colleges).

Salary
Salary is governed by the statutory provisions of the State of Baden-Württemberg and comprises the basic salary of salary grade W3.
In addition, the granting of performance-related pay components is possible. The family allowance is paid, where applicable, in accordance with civil service law.
