M.Sc. physics, chemistry or material science (f/m/d)
Einleitung
In this project, you will use and develop the next generation of quantum-based high-transmission x-ray spectrometers to study applied material systems. “Conventional” grating- and crystal-based setups offer either high x-ray sensitivity or high energy resolution. Novel quantum sensors, such as magnetic microcalorimeter detectors (MMCs), promise high sensitivity and high energy resolution, over a broad x-ray energy range.
As part of the interdisciplinary research project QS4Physics, you will work on developing a versatile platform that enables the integration of these novel quantum sensors into existing cutting-edge beamlines (e.g., X-SPEC) at the KIT Light Source. Combining state-of-the-art x-ray spectrometers and novel quantum sensors, you will investigate applied material systems, e.g., for catalysis or energy conversion, using soft and hard x-rays at the beamlines of the KIT Light Source. You will collaborate in an interdisciplinary team and contribute to research at the interface between detector physics and materials science.
This position includes the opportunity to pursue a PhD as part of your employment.

Profil
- Master’s degree in physics, chemistry, material science, or related field
- Hands-on experience with ultra-high vacuum (UHV) systems
- Ideally familiar with soft and hard x-ray and electron spectroscopies
- Enthusiasm for team-based and interdisciplinary science, with a focus on detector development and applied materials systems
- Good English skills (written and spoken)
