Cutting costs in the wrong places is also a decision – a bad one

Verbesserungsvorschläge

Transparency about the financial viability of projects and business units is not a luxury – it is a basic prerequisite for making good decisions.

Arbeitsatmosphäre

I want to be honest, because I owe that to future applicants.
The colleagues in IT do their jobs – often despite difficult circumstances. That deserves respect.
The company runs a webshop that is, economically speaking, a bottomless pit. Personnel costs, ongoing operations – none of it is even remotely covered by the revenue generated. Everyone in IT knows this. But it's not a conversation that happens where it could actually lead to consequences.

At the same time, cuts are being made in exactly the areas that would make a real difference: modern tools, qualified personnel. The result is an IT department that fixes things rather than shapes them – and employees who eventually stop asking why.

Anyone looking to build a long-term career in a strategically minded IT environment should think carefully before joining.

Image

Externally, the company presents itself as modern and forward-looking – a retailer embracing digital transformation. Internally, the reality looks quite different. The webshop, supposedly the flagship of the company’s digital presence, is in practice a cost driver that weighs on the bottom line – without that ever being openly acknowledged.

This creates a culture of dissonance: employees witness daily how resources flow into a loss-making project while cost-cutting measures are enforced elsewhere. The image projected outward and the lived reality inside the company are drifting further and further apart.

Anyone who values a consistent, credible employer brand – one that also holds up under scrutiny from within – will be disappointed here.

Karriere/Weiterbildung

Anyone joining with the expectation of growing professionally or taking on more responsibility over time will be disillusioned quickly. Structured career paths simply do not exist – at least not in IT. Promotions or development conversations happen more by chance than on the basis of any recognizable system.

Further training is not actively blocked, but it is not supported either. Those who want to develop their skills generally do so on their own initiative – and frequently at their own expense. Certifications, training programs, targeted personnel development? None of these are topics driven from the top.

In an environment where cuts are already being made in the wrong places, professional development is an unsurprising casualty. The result: employees who stagnate – or leave.

Arbeitsbedingungen

Too little staff, too much work – and those who stay end up picking up the tab. The workload is spread across too few shoulders, and this isn't a temporary situation – it's the permanent state of affairs. Positions go unfilled, tasks get done anyway – somehow, by someone.

That may work in the short term. In the medium term, it means that capable people leave – and the remaining burden lands on even fewer shoulders. A cycle that management either doesn't see or doesn't want to see.

Anyone expecting a realistic workload and a healthy balance between responsibilities and resources should significantly lower their expectations before joining.

Interessante Aufgaben

The job title suggests room to shape things. The reality is: you manage the status quo and spend more energy fighting internal resistance than doing actual work.

Ideas exist – the IT colleagues are not the problem. But good approaches get lost in endless approval loops, deferred indefinitely, or simply ignored. Anyone who genuinely wants to move a project forward needs one thing above all: the stamina to navigate structures that systematically slow down change.

A startlingly large share of day-to-day work consists of tasks you could do in your sleep – not because you've become that good, but because nothing ever evolves. Innovation is not something that gets lived here. It's something that exists in PowerPoint presentations.

In short: anyone looking for intellectual challenge and genuine creative ownership will not find it here.
