The only good thing were my colleagues.
If you’re looking for a workplace that truly values and supports its employees, you might want to think twice.
Show genuine appreciation for employees, not just empty words. Treat them with respect, not like school children.
Improve communication and make decisions more transparent.
Provide real career growth opportunities.
No appreciation coming towards the employees. You need to do as you are being told otherwise they will come after you.
Colleagues were mostly nice and supportive
More and more top-down approach. Chaotic. Woco unfortunately cannot help.
Intransparent, partially non-existent and misleading information
It's much lower compared to other Berlin tech companies.
The best part was my colleagues. Outside of management, the people were warm, welcoming and kind. They really support each other and care for one another.
Not as much career advancement or further education as what I have experienced at other companies in Berlin.
Low salary compared to other companies with a similar title/role. They seemed to exploit people who cared about education and language learning and paid them less than industry standard.
There was very little acknowledgement from management for the sacrifices employees made to work for Babbel. I observed many people moving across the world to work at this company and treated like a piece of paper that can be disgarded at any time. Very strong lack of hummanity from the upper levels.
My supervisor was one of the main instigators for passive agressive behavoir and consistently blamed other teams for issues. They rarely took accountability. A good leader brings calm and focus, this manager stirred the pot, which created a lot of unnecessary anxiety.
One of the things that made work almost impossible in the summer was there was no air conditioning and it was too hot to focus. The entire office is built with windows and no blinds, so there was no escape from the extreme heat.
Communication was handled poorly almost all of the time. Passive aggressive communication and infighting was the norm. Either bully other teams and throw them under the bus, or your team might go down too. A lot of fear which bred nasty behavior. Very unprofessional.
On a positive note, some people in the company are very interested in making Babbel a better employer. At Babbel, at least at the moment, you have a relaxed job and a lot of freedom.
What's currently nice and easy going will change in the future because the company is unfortunately going downhill, not least because of the lack of technical innovations, bad leadership and skilled people leaving the company.
Increasingly American, a lot of blah but without much behind it. Unfortunately, there is also increasingly more toxic positivity and empty promises, but still a really good employer, compared to other companies, where everyone can feel comfortable and safe, even if they are not cis-white.
It's okay. Some people will talk positively, some negatively, depending on their position and experience.
Perfect, you can have a 20h week while having a full time contract ;)
Expect to not have a career. The company is cutting costs.
The salary isn't competitive at all. It's okay to have a lower salary when the company provides lot's of potential to grow within, learn and have a chill life, but it's not the case (anymore).
It's okay, but still better than other companies.
Many colleagues have mentally resigned/quietly quitted and are sick more often than they work. Little to no motivation to get involved or tackle new challenges.
Great, nothing to add here.
Leadership is not really qualified. There are a few who have a lot on their plate, the rest just talk. More and more decisions are being made that have a strategically negative impact on the company and the culture.
Great, nothing to add here. You can work from everywhere in Germany, or up to 3 month remotely in the EU.
As in many companies, communication here is unfortunately weak, very American (there is a lot of beating around the bush) and few clear statements. Plus, everything is constantly changing.
Honestly a great employer when it comes to equality.
Don't expect to work on interesting topics. Innovation is completely missing in many areas, strategies are outdated and new ideas are rejected by leadership because they are often not even understood.
Remote work
Flexible Hours
Not much stress
No growth
Bad team leaders
Train your team leaders to be real leaders!!!!
Remote work or in the office
Without empathy and care
A lot of meetings for nothing, just wasting time
Just boring stuff, no challenges at all
I got fired 5 months 1/2 within my probation period 2 days before Christmas, based on feedback that was discriminatory and contained straight-up lies. Before getting let go I reached out the works council and DEI to get help managing the situation with my manager. They had one conversation with my manager without me in it and did not follow up on anything afterwards. You have no idea how traumatizing this whole experience was for me.
Invest in your infrastructure, you have over 1000 employees! Make DEI trainings compulsory for everyone and hold everyone accountable to the same standards. Also train your line managers! None of them is even remotely fit to lead people, this is on you!
People don't know how to work in the hybrid setup Babbel has in place or how to work efficiently as Babbel has zero infrastructure and offers zero guidance on how to collaborate. I felt pressured by my manager to go into the office and attend pointless meeting after pointless meeting simply because he did not know how to do otherwise. Most people at Babbel are very nice though.
Babbel has good DEI PR but is very performative.
I mean, sure, it's fine.
Babbel is a vegetarian company which I find very good on paper. However it is not strictly enforced and I've seen teams still ordering meals with meat on Babbel's dime so what's the point.
When I was there my manager was still building the career paths for our team so who knows, maybe it's good now. But at the time I really didn't have the visibility over what's possible for me at Babbel.
I guess there's worse.
Babbel is very chaotic, processes are non-existent and docs are all over the place; most people don't know where to find things or what exists. DEI trainings are not mandatory which creates a situation where everyone has different standards of what behavior is acceptable or not and no one is being held accountable for anything.
I feel like Babbel looks good on paper but is in reality not very generous with their employees. During my time there they readjusted salaries without really saying against what metrics and did not want to release their salary grids so it really makes you wonder what kind of salary gaps exist between employees. Limiting the BVG pass coverage to people living more than 5km away from the office is also very ableist.
I hadn't seen such overtly sexist behaviour in a while. Female and non-binary employees are definitely held to a different standard than men at Babbel in terms of behavior. Mind you, I'm neurodivergent on top of being non-binary and got double-bullied for it.
I did get to learn a lot at Babbel, the product is very interesting and the company has a proper UX culture.
Flexible working hours, helpful colleagues, the product.
The product has to be improved faster
Enhance the upper management communication and most importantly be honest about the strategy and the decisions
Flexible working hours, no micro management
One has to wait a lot to get a promotion
Below German average
It's a vegetarian company.
The best thing about Babbel is its people.
Not enough room in the office for everyone, it can get very crowded and impossible to work. So one has to do homeoffice often. Office managers do good job and take care of everything.
Communication in the direct team is great. The general communication, when it comes to important company-wide decisions, is very bad.
Flexible Arbeitszeiten, Benefits/Rabatte (z.B. vergünstigte Urban Sports Club Mitgliedschaft), BVG Karte oder Bike, etc.
Keine negativen Aspekte.
Great working environment that is dynamic and young, yet not high-pressure where you are likely to burn out.
Great purpose
Above average. No crazy workaholics in my team, but everyone is keen on getting their work done and reaching their targets. Part-time is possible in some cases, working hours are flexible.
Is average, but there are lots of percs, such as discounted Urban Sports membership, mobility ticket, sabbatical after 2 years, etc. which not everyone offers.
Great
Flat hierarchies
Open and transparent
Could be a bit better between teams, sometimes it feels like there are information silos.
Learning something new every day
So verdient kununu Geld.
