* Make better use of the knowledge and experiences that people are brining from previous roles, especially senior people.
* Involve people more in decisionmaking and do a better job of sharing information with them that is critical for success in their roles
* Develop an explicit career progression process
Relaxed and friendly
The organization has a solid reputation among peers, though it is also viewed as less impactful and less well known than many peers.
Mostly good, but sometimes there was poor planning between departments and by management, or unreasonable expectations from other staff, which made it hard to disconnect. I also had a pretty stressful and difficult parental leave, which was heavily due to a failure of the organization to plan ahead for how the needs of other departments would affect how much work I needed to do during my leave, as well as negative impacts on me from the decision making process described in "Leadership behavior".
I was able to advance my career quite a bit, but largely through my own effort, since the organization lacked any formal career development process or support. There was a decent professional development programme, however, and I gained valuable skills through it, although I had to make 99% of the effort myself.
I was paid noticeably less than in peer organizations for a similar role in the earlier years of my work here, and there was no increase in my salary even as my respnsibilities increased and a moved from employee to manager. I even had to do all the work to get a cost-of-living increase because there was no process for this. However, close to my departure there was an organization-wide effort to competitively benchmark salaries, so this situation improved quite a bit.
Responsibility is at the core of this organization's values
Everyone is really nice, and the organization does a great job of consistently hiring kind people and promoting a great culture
There was no obvious friction or problems in terms of interactions between younger and older colleagues that I ever experienced. However, I did experience less career development support for my identity as a more experienced, senior-level employee.
I repeatedly experienced situations where I was either not included or directly excluded by management from decisionmaking that significantly affected my work, where I didn't agree with the decisions and could have contributed valuable information that would have allowed us to make different decisions, and where the decisions that ultimately were made without me had a negative impact on my work.
However, in other ways leadership was strategic, supportive, and empowered me to self-manage a lot of my responsbilities.
Very flexible and generally quite acommodating
Mostly strong and clear, but sometimes important information was not shared with me that prevented me from being able to do my job to the fullest, and even after raising this issue multiple times, it was not corrected, even though it was acknowledged that it was an error.
There was obvious attention to diversity, and my diverse needs were comfortable accommodated.
I got to work on a consistently evolving and stimulating set of projects that had a real and positive impact on the world!
- Enthusiastic, driven team
- General kindness
- Interesting work
- Genuine care for employees
- Lack of management experience
- Lack of clear growth/professional development paths
- More diversity within the team, across all levels but especially leadership
- More steps to improve work life balance
- Review management structures so people who aren't good managers don't manage people
I think we have to keep reminding ourselves to take a deep breath and take time to regenerate once in a while. We're doing important, impactful work. We need fresh and healthy minds in the long run.
Very effective daily routines that helped me to keep a good balance.
I love the budget for learning and development. Sometimes I wish there were more specific development paths within the organization.
A bit above average for the NGO sector. In general, a transparent model.
I've felt psychologically very safe - I loved hanging out with the team on retreats or having chats.
We went through ups and downs - sometimes I missed some resoluteness in difficult times. But I guess that's normal in young organizations. Other than that, the founders are humble, truth-seeking and very supportive!
Sometimes I wished for better tech equipment and more freedom on decisions, regarding equipment (or software).
Very transparent, honest and human.
A great open mindset towards diversity and inclusion. I don't think you can ever get to a 100%, Future Matters is making a real effort!
I've enjoyed a high degree of autonomy on how I delivered my results. I personally love that!
