At Bayer we’re visionaries, driven to solve the world’s toughest challenges and striving for a world where ,Health for all, Hunger for none’ is no longer a dream, but a real possibility. We’re doing it with energy, curiosity and sheer dedication, always learning from unique perspectives of those around us, expanding our thinking, growing our capabilities and redefining ‘impossible’. There are so many reasons to join us. If you’re hungry to build a varied and meaningful career in a community of brilliant and diverse minds to make a real difference, there’s only one choice.

Data Engineer (all genders)

As a Data Engineer (all genders), you will design, implement, and operate data pipelines for our manufacturing data landscape. Your systems ingest data from various applications and sources, including MES, SAP, equipment databases, historian systems, applications, and production assets, and provide quality-assured, contextualized data for downstream systems, data science applications, and AI use cases. You will take an active role as an AI Ambassador, driving the adoption of AI in manufacturing-related processes, creating AI-ready data pipelines, and ensuring compliance with pharmaceutical manufacturing, GMP, data, validation, and governance requirements.

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design, develop, operate, and maintain robust data pipelines for our manufacturing systems data integration platforms.
  • Manage and support our data store, data lake, and data warehouse environment for the collection, harmonization, and provisioning of manufacturing data using AWS services, including working with Databricks as a data lake for data science and AI use cases.
  • Develop program code and make technology and system decisions related to the deployment and operation of large-scale ETL/ELT processes.
  • Work with GitHub and established DevOps, version control, and documentation practices.
  • Design interfaces and perform data transformations using integration platforms such as Node-RED or similar technologies, as well as design and implement equipment connectivity and interfaces, for example via OPC UA, including the associated data pipelines required for manufacturing asset integration.
  • Collaborate closely with Data Scientists to develop and implement predictive models, advanced analytics solutions, and AI use cases.
  • Serve as an AI Ambassador by promoting the responsible, user-focused, and compliant use of AI in pharmaceutical manufacturing, including leading and contributing to initiatives that integrate AI into manufacturing-related processes, such as data enablement, automation, decision support, and continuous improvement.
  • Work closely with internal functions across the organization, central platform teams, the global data science community, and external partners including suppliers, technology providers, universities, consultants, and industry partners.

WHO YOU ARE

  • University degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related discipline, combined with practical experience in Data Engineering, Data Analytics, or Software Development.
  • Several years of experience building scalable data models, data architectures, and ETL/ELT pipelines for structured and unstructured data from multiple sources.
  • Hands-on experience working with structured and unstructured data from diverse data sources, as well as developing scripts and tools to accelerate data processing and integration.
  • Strong proficiency in SQL, cloud platforms (AWS), structured and unstructured data, and software development.
  • Knowledge of distributed systems and agile software development methodologies.
  • Strong ability to collaborate across multiple teams and stakeholders in visible cross-functional roles, with a passion for planning and executing data and AI initiatives in a structured manner.
  • Enjoys defining and managing project plans as well as ensuring data availability.
  • Fluent German and English language skills, both written and spoken.
