Was ein Laden.
I joined SumUp in 2020, genuinely believing in their “We Care” value. In June 2021, while I was on sick leave with COVID-19—at a time when vaccines weren’t even available—I was laid off as part of a 150-person reduction. Despite the timing and circumstances, I tried to leave with grace and even received a glowing reference letter.
Years later, I decided to give the company another chance. I applied for a Data Analyst internship, went through the entire process, and received an offer. Then, without warning, it was rescinded—no proper explanation, just a vague statement about “unforeseen internal circumstances.” No one from TA ever reached out. No accountability. Just silence.
This isn’t just about one bad experience—it’s a pattern. The way I was treated while sick in 2021 was already dehumanizing. The way they handled this recent situation showed me that nothing has changed.
SumUp loves to market “We Care,” but in reality, they don’t care—not when it’s inconvenient, not when it actually matters. Behind the friendly branding and buzzwords is a company that discards people without a second thought. If you’re considering working here, know that the values they preach are just that—preached, not practiced.
I was approached by a so called senior recruiter on LinkedIn for an elixir developer position. I send a message back with a question that I never got an answer to. I still decided to book an online interview. The interviewer was five minutes late to the call and didn’t mention it, let alone apologized - something I have never encountered before. The interviewer was friendly enough, but seemed somehow uninterested. They asked me to send my CV, which I did, but then I never heard back. That‘s just disrespectful, especially since THEY contacted ME in the first place. Waste of time.

Please read your cv carefully and state explicitly you are mandating a 5 days per week office attendance.
A 100% mandatory office attendance for developers consitutes a severe lack of trust, hence I would not have wasted my time applying.
I also think that the pipeline should mature for a company of this age, it is not the time to be a startup anymore.
Please take some time to provide feedback, as applicants took the time to provide an meaningful applications as well.
For me, e.g. I would like to know, why you decided not to move on with the process even though I fulfilled almost all requirements, even from "nice to have". From my perspective, this feedback could be provided easily and would help me to understand my deficits better (e.g. maybe my skills are sufficient but not well presented - or the other way around) and be useful for future applications.
So verdient kununu Geld.
