Once Flexible and Positive, Now Micromanaged and Unfair

In my experience, SumUp had a very international and open atmosphere, especially in the earlier years. (until 2024, you can even see the shift in the reviews on Kununu) The team spirit was strong, colleagues were supportive, and the flexibility in daily work was a big advantage. I appreciated the respectful environment, the diverse people from many backgrounds, and the great office and benefits for the employees.

From 2024 onward, the work environment at SumUp changed significantly. Remote-work and home office flexibility was removed for some teams but not others, creating a sense of unfairness. Commission structures were repeatedly altered, often reducing pay despite increased responsibilities. Leadership communication became poor, and providing feedback or raising concerns sometimes led to negative treatment. I also observed unequal treatment within the team, favoritism, subtle harassment, and an increase in micromanagement, which reduced autonomy and trust. Career progression seemed largely tied to being on good terms with your manager rather than performance. In my experience, the supportive, positive atmosphere that once defined the company largely disappeared, replaced by inconsistency, stricter policies, and a more rigid culture.

Increase transparency and fairness in decisions around remote work, team policies, and compensation.
Establish clear career paths and objective criteria for promotions, independent of personal relationships with managers.
Improve communication between teams and from leadership, especially regarding product updates and organizational changes.
Ensure equal treatment of all team members and foster a respectful work culture to prevent favoritism or subtle discrimination.
Reinforce work-life balance and flexibility, which was previously a strong advantage.
