Used to be a good E-commerce PRODUCT company to work for before they let talent seek their worth elsewhere
Gut am Arbeitgeber finde ich
- A lot of great, taleneted, passionate people
- Product and Tech teams used to be great, full of motivated colleagues ready to challenge, improve, upgrade
- Good COVID response
- Home office and remote work future
Schlecht am Arbeitgeber finde ich
- Yearly hire & fire waves
- Doesn’t feel like a tech company anymore, no focus on real product management, insights driven product development, no data and interest in how product is being used
- Lack of strong long term tech strategy from product and hiring perspective
- Dishonest communication
- Lack of respect from management to employees
- Letting great talent go down the drain
- Opportunistic leaders
Verbesserungsvorschläge
Be fair and honest, value experts' opinions and senior members more, keep and develop talent, don’t be shady, don’t trick people that are leaving into not using their entitled vacation days
Arbeitsatmosphäre
Depending on the team, it's usually a positive experience (I can speak for my teams only). On the company level, there is a feeling of dispensable employees. Everyone is replaceable, whenever there is money it is thrown on new initiatives, projects, investments without a proper plan or strategy, and the moment the sales are going worse than planned, everything is scrapped, people let go, empty positions not re-hired, it's a cost cutting extravaganza. This happens at least once per two years, it's already quite obvious that whenever there is fast unstructured growth, brace yourselves because in 6-9 months most of it is going to be scrapped without it even starting.
Kommunikation
Reactive communication, layoffs, passive agressive style to let talent go on their own, everything is discussed in secret like it’s Game of Thrones, zero honesty of management, people treated like the ultimate expandable goods with zero IQ. Just because there is an All hands only means it’s ready to be predented officially in some fancy form.
Kollegenzusammenhalt
Great, especially among peers.
Work-Life-Balance
Even if some people in some departments work overtime and cannot disconnect from work, I have found it to be a completely personal approach. It is possible to set boundaries and it is possible to achieve an amazing balance. No one promotes overtime, but also working less is ofc not an option. It is expected to deliver great results in the 8 hours per day time span. Mostly you have complete freedom to organize those 8 hours to your liking and coming later and leaving early is a possibility as long as you don't abuse it. Depending on the team, people often complain about overhead, and the management always dismisses it (“talk to your mananger about the distribution of tasks”).
Vorgesetztenverhalten
Looks good on the surface, but there are political games all around. A lot of senior leaders do not have leadership skills, they are selfish, lack basic leadership and motivation skills, and the company doesn't really care about unprofessional behaviour. The motto seems to be: if you don't like it, you know where the doors are.
Interessante Aufgaben
Depending on the team, but mostly yes, although standards and expectations are not distributed equally by a mile. Product teams are often servants to other departments and influential figures, and there is no product discovery, experimentation, validation…
Arbeitsbedingungen
Offices mostly ok, if slightly impersonal considering it's an Home & Living company. Home office policies are a huge plus!
Umwelt-/Sozialbewusstsein
Sustainability is a topic, but treated like greenwashing.
Image
A lot of disappointment with the company coming from loyal employees who worked passionately through the years.
Karriere/Weiterbildung
Education is available, but career development is not well defined and you tend to be taken for granted. It's almost as: if you are at Westwing, you're there. When you become bored or unsatisfied, you are welcome to go, no one will break their back to keep you and think of opportunities for you.
