Gut am Arbeitgeber finde ich

In my opinion, mid/upper management does an excellent job of mistreating their subordinates equally. This actually really strengthens team cohesion and creates a special kind of unity and belonging.

Schlecht am Arbeitgeber finde ich

Reality and what you are told by superiors are frequently different. People quit and open positions remain unfilled for months. Management "always knows better" and you should never question any guidance they give you

Verbesserungsvorschläge

Use the few remaining good managers to mentor the managers that are not. Treat your employees with respect and make them feel valued. Hold ineffective managers accountable.

Arbeitsatmosphäre

everything is "top priority" and "needed immediately"

Work-Life-Balance

It's not really possible to work without long hours. Employees are then blamed for being "bad at assigning priority" even though it is last minute tasks from management that create these long hours

Vorgesetztenverhalten

Top prio is for managers to constantly remind their employees that they know "who is the boss" and that your value as an employee is not a major concern

Kommunikation

not transparent with creative interpretations of facts

Interessante Aufgaben

Gleichberechtigung

Verschiedene Altersgruppen von Kollegen aber all in all doch ein eher jüngeres Team

Interessante Aufgaben

Anfangs ja, nach einiger Zeit aber doch zu repetitiv und eingeschränkt für meinen Geschmack !

Gut am Arbeitgeber finde ich

You can learn a lot and get interesting tasks. You can have a great relationship with your coworkers. The pay is ok for Munich in most positions

Schlecht am Arbeitgeber finde ich

Ineffective management and interactions with non-management is the biggest issue. Poor understanding of job functions, total workload, and very little documentation or structure in processes has brought us here.

You get the feeling many managers don't respect or trust their employees. In the recent years, more long term employees than I can remember have quit or were fired/offered severance.

You also have to pay to park your car in the company parking spaces. Charging employees to park their own car in the company's parking garage is strange

Verbesserungsvorschläge

Fill the vacant positions, trust and respect your employees, listen to your employees

Arbeitsatmosphäre

People stay at the company because of their connection to their coworkers. In my opinion, some managers use this a leverage to treat their employees poorly with the knowledge they won't leave.

Image

The management seems to think the company has high visibility and brand value. In my experience, it does not and is completely unknown to people outside the industry and current customers

Work-Life-Balance

This depends on your manager, job function, and time of year. In the past 5 years the company has gone from fully remote to 2 days in the office and now 3 days in the office. This causes major problems with meeting room availability and the cafeteria

It is not uncommon to be in the office for long hours due to an 'urgent' topic you get from a manager at 4pm to be presented in a 9am meeting the next morning

Karriere/Weiterbildung

It seems like hard work or technical stills is not the main factor for a promotion, but rather, who you're friends with at the company. Networking is important for any promotion at any company, but here, it seems like it's the only factor.

Kollegenzusammenhalt

People stay at the company because of the connection with their coworkers.

Vorgesetztenverhalten

Your willingness to stay at the company depends on your manager. In my opinion, a large section of managers do not value their employees and consider them easily replaceable.

Arbeitsbedingungen

It depends on your manager, but most people I talk to are under a lot of stress most of the time, even outside 'traditionally stressful' times like sales campaigns/mega events/holiday sales. This could also be because many employees are not EU citizens and fear losing their residency status in Germany if they're fired.

Kommunikation

Not good at all, very little transparency. People quit, are fired, and move between different jobs with little or no explanation. Strategic decisions can change substantially from month to month

Gehalt/Benefits

Salaries seem to follow a step and band matrix. For example, the roles that require more technical skills normally would be on a higher band but the same step for seniority.

The problem with this is that you have some employees who have many years of experience, but were hired at an old step/band salary. This means a person with several years of the experience at the same band and level could be making less than a new hire in the same position.

Gleichberechtigung

The percentage of women working in the company at all levels is probably more than 50%. In terms of pay fairness, it's still a black box

Interessante Aufgaben

There are many interesting things to do and there's usually more work to do than people who can do the work.

Thank you for your candid feedback and for taking the time to share your perspective so openly.

We are glad to hear that you value your coworkers, find the tasks interesting, and feel there are strong opportunities to learn. The strong bond among our teams is something we deeply cherish. However, we are sad to read about your experiences with management, the perceived lack of trust, and the high-pressure environment you described. Leading with respect, empathy, and clear structure is our standard, and it is unfortunate to hear that you feel we are falling short of this.

We also take your specific feedback regarding communication around team changes, workload distribution, and our compensation and parking structures seriously. We want Westwing to be a place where hard work and expertise are the driving factors for growth, and where employees feel secure and valued.

We wish you all the best and hope to work together to improve your daily experience at Westwing.

Ambitious company with capable people, but micromanaging culture and constantly shifting priorities

1,9

Hat zum Zeitpunkt der Bewertung bei Westwing Group SE in München gearbeitet.

Verbesserungsvorschläge

I would focus on giving more autonomy to team leads and specialists to reduce bottlenecks and improve execution speed. More stable prioritization would help reduce constant context switching and improve long-term planning. I would also improve how employee concerns around cost of living, commuting and flexibility are addressed, with clearer acknowledgment of the constraints many employees face and more transparent communication around decision-making.

Arbeitsatmosphäre

The atmosphere is shaped by constant urgency, shifting priorities and limited autonomy. Teams often need to pause or deprioritize ongoing work to react to new leadership focus areas, which creates instability in day-to-day execution and makes it difficult to work in a structured way. Strong performance is often treated as the expected baseline, while when expectations are not fully met, the response tends to focus heavily on scrutiny and pressure rather than on structured support or alignment on how to improve.

Image

Externally, the company presents a strong employer brand. Internally, I experienced a noticeable gap between this image and how certain processes and initiatives were actually lived. For example, employee surveys were presented as anonymous while still requesting information such as department and tenure, which can affect how free people feel to respond. I also experienced similar patterns in HR-led initiatives, for example during Black Friday when employees were required to come into the office on two consecutive Fridays and follow a specific dress code, even though these were normally remote workdays. In other cases, employees were encouraged to leave public reviews for physical stores, which felt more externally driven than naturally motivated.

Work-Life-Balance

While flexibility is formally part of the setup, expectations do not always reflect employees’ reality. When concerns were raised about commuting costs and rising gas prices, requests to temporarily reduce office attendance from three to two days per week were immediately rejected. Employees living outside Munich were referred to this as a personal decision, without sufficient consideration of housing and commuting constraints. I personally found the way this was communicated quite dismissive, especially given the context of rising living costs and how unavoidable these constraints are for many people.

Karriere/Weiterbildung

Most development happens through hands-on experience and exposure to different challenges. Structured development paths or formal career frameworks do not seem common.

Kollegenzusammenhalt

The strongest aspect of the company. There are many smart, talented and genuinely supportive colleagues, and collaboration across teams works well on a day-to-day level.

Vorgesetztenverhalten

Decision-making is highly centralized, with many approvals required at C-level.
Micromanagement is deeply embedded in the culture, as teams are frequently given execution tasks but limited autonomy in how they are carried out. In some cases, new issues or questions are introduced that appear to conflict with recently communicated priorities or strategy, which adds to a sense of lacking direction. Team leads and specialists are hired for their expertise, but often do not have sufficient decision-making authority within their own areas of responsibility.

Kommunikation

Communication is largely top-down. In “Ask us anything” sessions, I had the impression that questions were selectively addressed, with no visibility on which topics remained unanswered. Important decisions are often not explained through data, customer feedback or clear reasoning.

Gehalt/Benefits

Compensation is formally positioned as merit-based, however in practice salary increases are difficult to achieve even with strong performance. The criteria behind compensation decisions are not transparent, making it unclear how performance translates into actual salary progression.

Interessante Aufgaben

The company operates in a fast-paced environment with a wide range of responsibilities. Employees are exposed to many different projects, which creates strong learning opportunities.

At the same time, we take your concerns seriously. We acknowledge your feedback regarding the need for more autonomy for team leads, better stability in prioritization, and more transparency in our communication. Growing disconnect and trust issues between leadership and employees

1,3
Nicht empfohlen
Mehrfachbewertung

From my perspective, the company still has the potential to improve significantly. However, this would require leadership to listen more carefully to employee feedback, address criticism transparently, and use it constructively to rebuild trust and improve the working environment.

Arbeitsatmosphäre

One of the most noticeable changes in recent years has been the growing perception of distrust between leadership and employees. Many decisions seem to be driven by the assumption that employees are less productive when working remotely than when working from the office. As a result, office attendance requirements have increased while remote work flexibility has decreased. Officially, these changes are often framed as efforts to strengthen collaboration and social interaction. In practice, however, many employees feel that focused work has become more difficult than before.

Work-Life-Balance

A disconnect exists regarding working hours and flexibility. Although trust-based working hours are officially promoted, even modest schedule adjustments - such as starting one hour earlier and leaving one hour earlier - can be difficult to arrange despite being fully compatible with daily operational requirements. This creates the impression that flexibility depends more on managerial preference than on business needs.

Karriere/Weiterbildung

Professional development opportunities also appear limited for the majority of employees. While a small group receives support through programs such as the "Key Talent Program," many others report having little access to training opportunities, development budgets, or structured growth paths. Over time, this can create the feeling that investment in employee development is reserved for a selected minority rather than being encouraged across the wider organization.

Umgang mit älteren Kollegen

There are no older employees.

Vorgesetztenverhalten

Critical questions raised during all-hands meetings or roadshow formats often appear to go unanswered, which further contributes to a sense of distance between leadership and employees.

A growing emphasis on confidentiality around future plans has also become noticeable. Important organizational changes often seem to happen with little transparency beforehand, creating the impression that employees are informed only once decisions have already been finalized. This approach contributes significantly to uncertainty and makes it difficult to build trust in leadership decisions.

Arbeitsbedingungen

Privacy screens are being removed, office spaces are increasingly converted into large open-plan environments, and employees are placed in more densely occupied areas. While these measures may have operational justifications, they contribute to a feeling among some employees that visibility and oversight are becoming more important than creating productive working conditions.

The office situation itself has become a frequent source of frustration. In addition to larger open office layouts, a growing number of desks are being converted into flexible desk-sharing setups. While fixed desks still exist, the overall direction is clear. Many employees perceive this as a loss of individuality and personal ownership over their workspace. Combined with the shortage of meeting rooms, it often results in discussions and video calls taking place directly at desks, creating additional distractions for everyone around them.

Kommunikation

Not transparent at all. Confidentiality against its own employees seems to be a key principle. Emails announcing layoffs or organizational changes have become a recurring part of daily life. The impression is often created that workforce reductions are being implemented gradually through restructurings and role eliminations. What many employees find especially frustrating is the contrast between highly over-positive C-Level communication in company meetings and the reality that further layoffs or headcount reductions are communicated shortly afterward.

Gehalt/Benefits

There is a noticeable disconnect between the company's "pay-for-performance" messaging and how compensation decisions are perceived internally. The CPO frequently highlights performance-based compensation as a core principle. However, many employees feel that only a very small percentage of the workforce is realistically considered for salary increases, regardless of how broadly strong performance may have been across teams. This creates the perception that predefined quotas play a larger role than actual performance outcomes. As a result, the credibility of the "pay-for-performance" message has been weakened for many employees.

Gleichberechtigung

The company is divided into two classes: leadership and ordinary employees.

Interessante Aufgaben

Instead of providing a positive vision for the future, communication appears to focus primarily on cost reductions and organizational efficiency. For many employees, it has become increasingly difficult to understand where the company is heading and what precisely the long-term strategy looks like.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us in such detail.
We are sorry to read that you viewed several aspects of your time with us critically. At the same time, we genuinely appreciate employees who openly share their perspectives, even when the feedback is challenging. Honest feedback is essential in helping us grow and improve as an organization.

The topics you mentioned, including transparency, communication, trust, and working conditions, are all areas that are important to us and that we continuously strive to improve. In a dynamic business environment, change is sometimes unavoidable. We understand that these changes can create uncertainty and that not every decision may be equally understandable from every employee's perspective. This makes it even more important for us to foster open dialogue and communicate the reasons behind our decisions as transparently as possible.

We also take your comments regarding flexibility, career development, and compensation seriously. Our goal is to provide fair and transparent frameworks while creating development opportunities for as many employees as possible. At the same time, we recognize that individual experiences and expectations can vary.
We appreciate that, despite your critical feedback, you still see potential for improvement. We share that ambition and are continuously working to strengthen our company culture, leadership, and internal processes. Feedback from our employees plays an important role in shaping these efforts.

Gut am Arbeitgeber finde ich

Colleagues are the main reason why many people haven’t resigned yet.

Schlecht am Arbeitgeber finde ich

Office policy
lack of appreciation
no bonuses (Christmas/holiday pay)

Verbesserungsvorschläge

Please, please start listening to your employees. In recent years, the company has changed from a great, open workplace with fantastic colleagues into more of a performance-driven machine, where communication is lacking and where, from the top, you get the feeling that my work is not as important as that of others.

Arbeitsatmosphäre

rather 2.5 instead of 3 stars. In my team, the working atmosphere is good and we receive regular feedback. However, I hear from many colleagues that they are very overworked and that too many tasks are distributed among too few people. As a result, it is normal to have to work overtime, which is not paid because there is no time account or similar system in place.

Image

Externally, the image is still very good, but internally it is getting worse.

Work-Life-Balance

Unfortunately, I feel that work–life balance is being completely undermined as the number of required office days is being increased again. Instead of trusting employees, people are being forced to come back to the office three times a week. This is a major challenge, especially for families with young children or for people with mental health conditions.

Karriere/Weiterbildung

So far, I haven’t actively noticed many opportunities for further training. It seems as if professional development is only accessible to a selected group.

Kollegenzusammenhalt

Team cohesion is very strong. However, I’ve heard from many people that they would have left the company long ago if it weren’t for their team. Unfortunately, that speaks more for the individual employees than for the company itself. I also would have left a long time ago if I didn’t have my team.

Vorgesetztenverhalten

Here as well, rather 2.5 instead of 3 stars. My direct supervisors are great and behave very professionally toward me and the team. Unfortunately, I feel that higher-level management has somewhat lost its sense of humanity and doesn’t trust us, instead seeing us more as numbers who are expected to constantly perform at a high level.

Arbeitsbedingungen

The office is not set up for a three-day in-office policy. There aren’t enough meeting rooms or lunch options. Some of the laptops are quite outdated, although this is something they say they want to address.

It is expected that you work overtime when there is a lot to do, but this time is not recorded or paid. Within the team, however, you can coordinate and leave earlier on other days, which I think is good.

There are also recurring issues with the air conditioning in the office: it’s too cold in the winter, and in the summer it sometimes doesn’t even turn on. In my office, it can get very noisy when everyone is in different meetings and there are no suitable quiet spaces available.

Kommunikation

there are monthly all-hands meetings that share the latest news/updates. every few months, there are also Q&A sessions where you can submit your questions or comments. However, only selected questions are shown during the all-hands, while the rest are forwarded internally. You rarely receive an answer to the questions you submit. A few years ago, these questions used to be published internally together with the corresponding answers. Unfortunately, this is no longer done, which I find very disappointing. I especially appreciated being able to read through the questions and answers afterward in case you were unable to attend the all-hands.

Gehalt/Benefits

For Munich standards, a bit low, but still okay.

Interessante Aufgaben

In my area, I have a very structured workflow with fewer variations. However, I think that in general, the tasks are still interesting.

Thank you for taking the time to provide such detailed and candid feedback. It is great to hear that the strong cohesion within your team and the professional support from your direct supervisors remain a highlight of your experience, as these relationships are the bedrock of our daily work.

At the same time, we take your concerns, such as the perceived lack of appreciation very seriously. the culture was so great back in the days. but they wanted to move to a performance culture and somehow completely lost the humanity. it is now a rather toxic culture. leaders that demand things. when you say your opinion you might hear about it later and get accused of being negative or whatsoever. I am not kidding when I say it has "The office" vibes.

Image

externally still good

Work-Life-Balance

either you want a work-life-balance or a promotion. you won't finish your tasks when you start at 9 and end at 5. come in early, leave later. expect 10-12 hours, but no compensation for it

Karriere/Weiterbildung

either you take care of your career and work super long hours without compensation or you don't come far. career at westwing is super random. people get promoted because of politics. not really comprehensible. you can ask for education but you have to bring a strong business case - which is often declined.

Gehalt/Benefits

considering the work hours, not good.

Kollegenzusammenhalt

it's so sad but I believe most of the people would have left already if the team mates wouldn't be so good. the recruiting team somehow does a great job as the spirit here is good. even tho everything else is not. unfortunately, most of these colleagues are frustrated.

Vorgesetztenverhalten

this company is like a school. the leadership style is more autocratic - what they say is set, there is no flexibility. they want a performance culture but do not create conditions for a performance culture (they compare themselves with bcg in some topics)

Arbeitsbedingungen

the working conditions are not how they are supposed to be if you take into account that you should deliver exceptional results, thus high-performance claim. the office is too small for a 3-day-office policy as of april, it's a battle about whether you have great air but you're freezing as the air condition system or what it's called is just not working. in summer it's super hot and you can't breeze. in winter it's smelly or too cold. it is very loud, or you never get meeting rooms. the cafeteria is too full - you need to get lunch after1 but most meetings start at 1. the toilets are not clean, the kitchen's look like young boys live in an apartment together at the end of the day. not what you would expect from a company that has such a premium brand.

It is true that we consciously benchmark ourselves against strong players and adopt best practices where appropriate, as we hold ourselves to high performance standards and believe that continuous improvement requires critically questioning the status quo. At the same time, we fully recognise that a sustainable performance culture can only exist when the right conditions are in place. For this reason, we explicitly encourage all employees to voice their opinions, share feedback and propose improvements, e.g., with their leaders, the People & Culture team, or other internal stakeholders. In the context of your feedback, this could be openly communicating desired start times of meetings, and raising ideas with regards to the work environment in the office.

We acknowledge your concerns raised about office capacity, infrastructure and general working conditions, as we are actively reviewing these areas. Some measures are already being put in place, like the provision of additional meeting rooms.

Thank you again for your candid feedback. Our goal remains to create an environment in which high performance, personal development and respectful collaboration go hand in hand.
