First TCT Turbocharger Rolls off Production in Japan
TCT40 unit built under licence by Mitsui
At the MITSUI E&S Co., Ltd. Tamano factory on September 19th, 2025, Everllence took part in a ceremony to mark the first-ever TCT turbocharger to be produced under license in Japan – a TCT40 unit.
Attendees included Ichiro Tanaka, Director of MITSUI E&S Co., Ltd., Assistant to President, and in charge of Marine Propulsion Systems Div. and Logistics Systems Div.; and Dr Daniel Struckmeier, Managing Director of Everllence Japan Ltd., Head of Sales for License Turbocharger & Exhaust Gas Treatment APAC.
As one of the largest, marine, two-stroke engine builders in the world, MITSUI E&S Co., Ltd. has been an Everllence turbocharger licensee since 1981. In 2022, it successfully concluded negotiations to build Everllence’s new TCT axial-turbocharger series, replacing the older TCA turbocharger for two-stroke engines.
While production in Japan is beginning with the TCT40 model, it intends to progressively add other sizes in the TCT range over time. The turbochargers will be installed on MITSUI-manufactured Everllence two-stroke engines.
Tanaka said: “Since entering into a licensing agreement with Everllence in 1981, we have manufactured and sold over 4,000 MITSUI-Everllence turbochargers over the past 40 years. It is a great pleasure to commence production of the latest turbocharger, the ‘MITSUI-Everllence TCT40’ under this license. We deeply appreciate the strong partnership between the two companies and the dedicated efforts of everyone involved. We look forward to continuing our successful collaboration in the years to come.”
Struckmeier said: “This is a significant milestone that has been coming since our two companies signed the TCT licence agreement, enabling MITSUI E&S Co., Ltd. to bring our latest turbocharger technologies to the market. At the same time, we know that many Japanese customers prefer products that are manufactured domestically. Local production helps build trust, ensures faster delivery, and aligns with customer expectations for domestic sourcing. We are very happy with developments and are confident that it will further enhance the appeal of MITSUI E&S Co., Ltd. within the two-stroke engine segment while highlighting the strength of the TCT series.”
The TCT series
Everllence launched the TCT turbocharger series in 2019, starting with the TCT40, and subsequently followed by the TCT30, TCT50 and TCT60. Ultimately, the series will comprise six frame-sizes including TCT70 and TCT80 units.
The newly developed radial compressor and axial turbine are key components of the series. Both have been developed with new design features, backed by the latest simulation technologies, resulting in a very compact and lightweight turbocharger design. Thanks to its superior charging efficiencies, wide compressor maps and ample matching options, TCT turbochargers can easily be matched to engines. Their variability covers not only a wide range of engine-tuning options and fuel types, but also all new requirements of today’s exhaust-gas after-treatment systems for IMO Tier III operations.
In general, TCT turbochargers offer the following features:
• long TBOs – high performance bearings;
• maintenance-friendly service concept resulting in low life-cycle costs;
• highest specific flow rates, resulting in a compact and lightweight design;
• lowest noise emissions;
• highest efficiency levels.
For two-stroke engines, TCT-series turbochargers are suitable for engines ranging from 5.5 MW up to 24 MW per turbocharger. Typical applications include prime movers for container vessels, large bulk carriers or tankers.

Everllence, ABB and OceanWings Join Forces to Develop Sustainable Propulsion Concepts
MoU’s initial focus on future LNG carrier setup.
At GasTech 2025 in Milan, Everllence signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ABB, the global technology leader in electrification and automation, and OceanWings, a global leader in wind-assisted propulsion systems.
The MoU aims to jointly develop an optimised propulsion concept that builds upon Everllence’s and ABB’s existing DFE+ (Diesel-Electric with variable speed) concept, that enables:
high engine efficiency, even at partial loads;operational flexibility through multiple engines;future integration of sustainable energy sources like batteries and fuel cells.
With growing regulatory and financial pressure to reduce emissions and the technological maturity of wind-assisted propulsion systems (WAPS), the partners aim to showcase the benefits of combining WAPS with DFE+.
OceanWings’ proven wingsail technology features an Adaptive Trimming capability, which continuously optimises sail positioning by accounting for each vessel’s unique aerodynamic profile and all aerodynamic interactions.
Romain Grandsart, COO of OceanWings, said: “LNG carriers sail fast and spend typically 70% of their time at sea. This is ideal for harnessing wind and the full potential of OceanWings rigid wingsails. Combined with optimised propulsion, including a DFE+ highly efficient variable-speed concept engine, this unlocks high double-digit fuel savings and greenhouse-gas emissions reduction, all being compatible with the boil-off gas management.”
Rune Lysebo, Head of Strategic Market Development, ABB’s Marine and Ports division, said: “We at ABB believe that the flexibility of our hybrid electrical propulsion system is a good match with the variable power contribution from the wind. By utilising ABB’s advanced power and energy solution, we are able to optimise the operational efficiency of the vessel.”
Dominik Thoma, Global Manager LNG Cargo, Everllence said: “While WAPS introduces highly variable propulsion demand due to fluctuating wind conditions, DFE+ propulsion offers precise load control and operational flexibility, making it exceptionally well-suited to harness the variable and intermittent power contributions of wind-assisted systems. In combination with smart power-management systems and adaptive trimming, we see significant potential for reduced emissions and OPEX.”
The initial scope of the collaboration will focus on a future LNG carrier concept, with further applications planned within the cargo segment. The partners see strong potential for long-distance operations, vessels with sufficient deck space for wingsails and propulsion systems requiring high flexibility. The collaboration also aims to deliver significant reductions in both OPEX and CAPEX for next-generation vessel designs.

Everllence Confirms Successful Running of World-First, Ethanol-Fuelled, Two-Stroke Engine
Testing confirms ME-LGIM suitability for new alternative fuel.
Everllence has confirmed the successful running on ethanol – at all load points – of a 90-bore ME-LGIM (-Liquid Gas Injection Methanol) engine in Japan.
Everllence pioneered the ME-LGIM platform over a decade ago with the first commercial engine entering service in 2016 within the methanol-carrier segment. Building on experiences from these engines, Everllence scaled up its methanol burning portfolio in 2021 with the first ME-LGIM for a vessel outside the methanol carrier segment and now enjoys prominence as the best-selling, methanol-burning engine across all vessel segments with more than 225 units ordered for newbuildings alone and more than 50 engines in operation already.
Building further on the ME-LGIM platform, the successful operation on ethanol means Everllence now has a fully operational engine with which to document ethanol capabilities.
Ole Pyndt Hansen – Senior Vice President, Head of Two-Stroke R&D, Everllence – said: “The past few years have brought steadily growing interest in ethanol from the market. We always do our utmost to listen to these signals and have accordingly been carrying out the necessary design considerations for quite some time; this has provided us with a solid technical foundation. With this latest development, we now have the technical know-how from an actual running engine to take us to the next level. Our data confirms our earlier assumption that we could run our ME-LGIM engine on ethanol without issues.”
Bjarne Foldager – Head of Two-Stroke Business, Everllence – said: “It’s a proud moment to see yet another ‘first-ever’ for Everllence and that we, once again, have been able to draw on our company’s long engineering heritage. We already have five dual-fuel technologies in service along with an ammonia-powered engine that is on the verge of release. Our position as the world’s leading engine developer within the two-stroke marine segment means that we have a special obligation to push technologies and serve all markets in our efforts to decarbonise the global maritime industry. Now we need legislation in place that considers the case of ethanol as a viable fuel source, and we need a requisite market demand. At Everllence, the market speaks and we listen.”
Michael Petersen – Senior Vice President, Head of PrimeServ Denmark – Everllence, said: “The successful conclusion of running in Japan means that we are now significantly closer to offering ethanol as retrofit product, especially on the S90 engines already equipped with ME-LGIM engine technology, just as our successful ME-GI, ME-LGIP and ME-LGIM retrofit offerings. As such we are eagerly awaiting further market input with regard to the viability of ethanol from commercial, application and bunkering perspectives. In general, introducing ethanol capability to retrofitted engines will bring those customers of ours wishing to pursue alcohol-burning engines – as their pathway to IMO-defined net-zero – to a similar technology-readiness and capability as those directly adopting from our existing engine portfolio.”

Everllence supplies compression technology for bio-energy based CCS flagship project in Stockholm
Everllence axial compressor and expander to support biogenic CO₂ capture at Värtaverket biomass power plant - 800’000 tons of CO₂ per year to be permanently stored.
Everllence has been selected by EPC Contractor SAIPEM to supply the core compressor and expander technology for Stockholm Exergi’s BECCS (Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage) project – one of the world’s largest bioenergy-based carbon capture and storage initiatives. The facility, located at the Värtaverket biomass power plant, is designed to capture and permanently store biogenic CO₂ released during the combustion of forest-based biomass.
Dr. Uwe Lauber, CEO of Everllence, states: “This project marks a major step toward industrial-scale carbon removals. By enabling the permanent storage of biogenic CO2, the facility supports Sweden’s ambition to become climate-positive by 2030 — and serves as a scalable model for urban carbon removal worldwide. We are proud to contribute to this pioneering initiative with our high-efficiency axial compressor and expander train, delivering the reliability and performance required for continuous large-scale operation.”
The CO₂ is separated from the plant’s flue gas stream, which results from burning sustainably sourced wood residues such as chips, branches, and treetops. Once operational, it will remove up to 800,000 tons of CO2 annually – more than the yearly emissions from all road traffic in Stockholm. The captured CO2 will then be permanently stored beneath the North Sea, via Northern Lights.
The Carbon Capture plant is equipped with Everllence’s electrically-driven MAX1 compressor train for handling the flue-gas, comprising the AG110 axial compressor and the EN080 axial expander.
Supported by the Swedish government and EU funding, the project has also secured carbon removal agreements with global companies such as Microsoft. The biomass power plant already provides sustainable heat and electricity to over 800,000 people in the Swedish capital.
Uwe Emmerich, Head of Sales Petrochemicals and Energy Storage at Everllence, adds: “Our proven axial turbomachinery is ideally suited for high-volume flue gas applications like this one. Our technology ensures stable operation under demanding conditions, while maximizing energy recovery. Stockholm is the first BECCS facility to implement this configuration — and it sets a new benchmark for efficiency and scalability in the carbon capture sector.”

Everllence CO2 Compression Technology for UK Flagship CCS Project
• Everllence to supply five compressor trains for Net Zero Teesside Power and Northern Endurance Partnership
• NZT Power to capture up to 2m tonnes of CO2 annually, with NEP transporting it to offshore storage sites
Everllence has been commissioned to supply the CO₂ compression systems for Net Zero Teesside Power (NZT Power) and the Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP) – two flagship projects within the UK’s governmentbacked East Coast Cluster decarbonization initiative in northeast England. NZT Power is poised to be the UK’s first commercial-scale gas-fired power plant with integrated carbon capture and storage (CCS). NEP will provide the transportation and storage backbone of the East Coast Cluster, gathering CO2 from NZT Power and other industrial sources and permanently storing it in offshore geological formations beneath the North Sea – helping to decarbonize local power generation and industry on Teesside. Developed as a joint venture between bp and Equinor, NZT Power will generate more than 740 megawatts of dispatchable low-carbon electricity, equivalent to the average annual consumption of more than one million UK homes, while capturing up to 2 million tonnes of CO₂ per year. Combined with emissions from additional industrial sources, NEP’s infrastructure will eventually be able to transport and store up to 10 million tonnes of CO2 annually from the Tees Valley region. NEP is a joint venture between bp, Equinor and TotalEnergies. Dr. Uwe Lauber, CEO of Everllence, states: “This major initiative sets a precedent for climate-compatible power generation at scale. It shows how flexible gas-fired plants can become part of a net-zero energy system when paired with carbon capture. We’re proud to contribute to this flagship project with our CO₂ compression expertise – supporting both UK climate goals and long-term industrial competitiveness.” As leader of a consortium with GE Vernova – and with the support of construction partner Balfour Beatty and technology partner Shell Catalysts & Technologies – Technip Energies is responsible for the design, procurement, construction and commissioning of the facility, including its CO₂ handling systems.
Everllence has been selected to supply a total of five centrifugal compressor trains for two different stages of the CO₂ process: two integrally geared compressors (type RG) will boost wet CO₂ at low pressure, driven by fixedspeed motors with soft starters and regulated through inlet guide vanes (IGV). The three radial barrel compressors (type RB) will process dry CO₂ at high pressure for offshore transmission via the Northern Endurance Partnership network and are equipped with electric motors featuring variable frequency drives (VFD). The supply also includes lubrication and control systems, and process-specific auxiliary equipment. In total, the five systems will compress over 370,000 kilograms of CO₂ per hour. The scope further includes a dynamic process simulation, enabling the compressor systems to operate at their full potential in terms of process efficiency. The integrally geared compressors will feature a digital twin with virtual sensors, allowing the operator to validate measured data in real time. Using machine learning capabilities, the system can continuously adjust and refine its performance based on operating data. Dr. Marco Ernst, Head of Segment CCUS at Everllence, adds: “Our compressor portfolio is designed to meet the full range of process conditions in CO₂ service – supporting everything from low-pressure to high-pressure applications, liquefaction, and pipeline transport. With all compression solutions provided from a single source, we ensure seamless integration, technical reliability, and efficiency across the entire CCUS value chain.”

Everllence Breaks Ground on New Danish HQ
Everllence has held a groundbreaking ceremony in Roskilde, Denmark to mark the commencement of the building phase of its new Danish headquarters. Called ‘The Valley’, the development is a joint venture between Everllence and Volkswagen Immobilien, the Volkswagen Group’s real-estate division.
The company states that its current base in Greater Copenhagen – and its Holeby, southern Denmark site – have given rise to many innovations that drive climate-neutral shipping, including such world-firsts as the high-pressure dual-fuel two-stroke engine, methanol-powered engines, as well as the first firing of a two-stroke engine fuelled by ammonia.
However, the sites’ current facilities – particularly at its Copenhagen location – are outdated with major renovations otherwise looming. The decision to relocate is driven then by strategic necessity with The Valley offering space for growth, both in terms of workforce and production capacity, and in an industrial setting that facilitates the testing of new fuel-technologies while ensuring safer logistics.
The ceremony was attended by members of the Everllence Executive Board and a number of prominent guests, including: Everllence CEO, Dr Uwe Lauber; Managing Director Volkswagen Immobilien, Hardy Brennecke; Everllence Head of Two-Stroke Business and Country Manager Denmark, Bjarne Foldager; and Mayor of Roskilde, Tomas Breddam.
Lauber said: “Today’s event marks a historic milestone in Everllence’s journey. As we turn the first sod in this exciting venture, we are laying the foundation – not just for a new campus, but for a new chapter in our company’s history. Our current facilities in Denmark have served us well but were not built for the future we are envisaging. This location is purposely designed for excellence, tailored to the unique needs of our people, our technologies, and our decarbonisation aspirations. The future starts here – and it starts now.”
Located on the site of a former gravel pit, The Valley campus lies 40 km west of Copenhagen and will comprise a 70,000 m² complex of buildings including office space for at least 1,500 workstations, a teaching academy, meeting centre and an employee club. Construction by general contractor, DS Flexhal, will also see the building of a production unit and warehouse, as well as a research centre with testing facilities.
Speaking on behalf of VW Immobilien, Brennecke said: “The traditional groundbreaking ceremony for ‘The Valley Campus’ marks the start of construction for a special real-estate project. Over the next few years, modern, sustainable office and production facilities, an academy, and meeting areas will be built on the approximately 175,000 m² site. With this sustainable construction project, Everllence is underscoring its successful business development. We wish everyone involved in the project a thriving and accident-free construction period.”
Foldager said: ”This project is also a strategic consolidation that brings together our teams from Copenhagen and Holeby, creating an environment where expertise meets collaboration, where two-stroke meets four-stroke – and with room to grow, free from the constraints of residential surroundings. Here, we can innovate safely, efficiently, and responsibly – especially as we work with new fuels like ammonia. Together, we are building more than a main location for Everllence in Denmark; we are building a legacy.”
Completion of the entire project is scheduled for 2028.

Everllence and Plastic Fischer Partner in Fight against Plastic Waste
Companies share goal of removing up to 500 tons of plastic pollution from Indian rivers
Everllence has signed a three-year sponsorship agreement with social enterprise, Plastic Fischer. As part of the partnership, rivers near Everllence locations in India will be cleared of plastic waste.
This support will enable Plastic Fischer to collect and recycle between 450 and 500 tons of plastic over the next three years. To this end, a total of seven floating barriers will be installed in Vadodara and Bangalore to capture river plastic. Additionally, the startup will use the funding to open two material-recovery facilities to sort and recycle the collected materials. In the first year alone, these measures will create 20 local jobs.
Uwe Lauber – CEO of Everllence – said: “For many years, we have been a driver of the maritime energy transition and contributed to sustainable shipping with our technologies. Protecting oceans and waterways is therefore especially important to us. Plastic Fischer has been carrying out impressive work in this field for many years, and we are proud and happy to support their mission.”
Karsten Hirsch – CEO and founder of Plastic Fischer – said: “We are very pleased to take our next big step with Everllence and expand into two new locations at once. This long-term support will help us build infrastructure and drive sustainable change on-site. Over the coming years, we will remove hundreds of tons of ocean and river plastic, create dozens of jobs, and explore new ways to properly process river plastic. We are proud to have earned Everllence’s trust to build a flagship project with a strong local impact together.”
Plastic pollution destroys ecosystems and contributes to the loss of biodiversity. 80% of ocean plastic originates from river pollution and can be more effectively tackled there. This prevents its spread into the ocean as microplastics and garbage patches.
Plastic Fischer uses specially-developed barriers — so-called ‘TrashBooms’ — to capture plastic directly in rivers. These systems are built locally using available resources with the material collected then recycled by the company wherever possible. Non-recyclable waste is processed in cement plants — a more environmentally-friendly alternative to landfill or incineration – as it produces no residues like ash and simultaneously replaces fossil fuels.
Act locally, impact globally
As part of the partnership, regular joint-collection campaigns with employees will take place at Everllence locations in India. The company operates at four sites domestically, manufacturing four-stroke engines and steam turbines. In addition to production facilities in Aurangabad and Bangalore, Everllence runs a PrimeServ service workshop in Vadodara and a sales office in Mumbai.
Michael Melzer, Head of Experience Communications and responsible for donations and sponsorships at Everllence, said: “What convinced us about Plastic Fischer, in addition to our shared commitment to protecting waterways, was its local approach. Together, not only can we fight plastic waste but we can also make a contribution to local economic development around our Indian sites. Furthermore, our employees in Bangalore and Vadodara can volunteer in the cleanups – it’s a great cooperation.”
About Plastic Fischer
Plastic Fischer is a Cologne-based startup that combats ocean plastic pollution while creating jobs in emerging countries. The social enterprise has developed floating barriers that can be built anywhere in the world using locally available materials and effectively prevent river-borne plastic from reaching the ocean. Since 2021, Plastic Fischer has collected more than two million kilograms of plastic at eight project sites and created over 80 jobs in Asia.

Moving big things to zero
