Arbeitsatmosphäre

Big open space office, reminds me of chicken battery farm. Way too loud and the office building is not appealing, neither from the outside, nor from the inside. Too many people are sitting very close to each other. Situated in the middle of Berlin (Alexanderplatz) there is no space nearby to have a quiet lunch break (which you will skip mostly anyways).

Vorgesetztenverhalten

Top management profiles themselves constantly. They really think they are the biggest just because they worked at big consultancies before. What is really clear to feel is their lack of people management skills like empathy, trust, encouragement, humbleness. Management is more interested in the development of their Wayfair stocks than developing their team members. If I would need to describe the behaviour of the management: Unfair, non-transparent, superficial, selfish, only focused on money, cliquish with other management members, pretending to be something which they aren't, disrespectful.

Kollegenzusammenhalt

I like to use the chicken battery example again: Because you sit so close and spend all of your (unpaid) overtime hours together, the team spirit is quite strong.

Interessante Aufgaben

Repeating tasks. Filling out excel sheets for hours as trade show preparation. After 6 months you will know all of your tasks because they will be the same everyday. In other companies I learned much more in half of the time. My time at Wayfair didn't bring me any value.

Kommunikation

Top down communication from management. No room for discussions or improvements. You have to be able to strictly follow the management guidelines and don't be creative! Otherwise this is not the place for you.

Gleichberechtigung

People without consulting experience are being downgraded. Even though management wouldn't tell you this but it is very obvious in the way they threat you.

Umgang mit älteren Kollegen

There are no older colleagues. Everyone is around 28-40. Nobody older than that would want to work there and would tolerate the management's behaviour.

Karriere / Weiterbildung

Review cycles which happen 2x a year prevent you to climb up the ladder, even if you're doing an exceptional job. The rule is: A promotion is only possible after 1 full year. And also then people from other departments will rate you even though you never ever saw them / worked with them. This system is so bad, not transparent and especially it does not evaluate peers in an equal way. In my review they wrote down things which simply were not true - and even though I showed them the proof - they didn't remove it.

Gehalt / Sozialleistungen

Salary is only average, especially if you break it down to all the unpaid overtime hours and weekends you spend working for this company.

Arbeitsbedingungen

You are expected to use your own / private mobile phone to answer business calls (from your manager and clients)! Also you are expected to read emails after normal office ours (after 8/9pm). Most of the people are working on the weekends. Management expects you to be responsive on the weekends as well. After 16+hours on a tradeshow you are expected to respond to emails in the evening. You won't get a day off the next day. Tradeshow visits on Saturday and Sunday are mandatory. I don't even know if this legally allowed in Germany.

Umwelt- / Sozialbewusstsein

Dropshipping and shipping in general is not the most environmentally friendly business activity. But Wayfair does not care about this. All that counts is money. Packages need to be wrapped double with plastic and other materials so that items wont break. The more plastic and protection the better - that is what Wayfair aims for. No compensation for all the carbon dioxide resulting from shipping packages allover Europe (or the US). This company must have a huge carbon footprint and they won't spend money on reducing it.

Work-Life-Balance

Even though they promote some offers like free yoga classes or gym membership discounts - that doesn't matter much because you won't have time to use those incentives anyways. And if you have time, you won't have any energy because this place sucks out all of your happiness and joy.

Either no one knows Wayfair and if they heard something about this company than it is associated with a negative image (especially as an employer).

Verbesserungsvorschläge

  • Remove the review cycle and let team members be evaluated by their manager. They spend most of their time with them and know best about their performance and improvement areas.

Some colleagues are very nice, company parties are great as well.

Contra

All of the points I mentioned about. I definitely cannot recommend Wayfair as a place to learn, improve and build business or personal self-esteem. It is exactly the opposite. So think twice before you join this company. There are so many amazing companies out there which value you as a person are truly interested in developing and supporting you. Stay away from Wayfair as a young, highly talented professional!

Arbeitsatmosphäre

Ständiger Baulärm, stressiges Großraumbüro, permanenter Druck vom Management und jeder hat Angst vor Kündigung oder Mobbing

Vorgesetztenverhalten

Meine Vorgesetzte hatte mich über Monate hinweg gemobbt. Meine Leistung wurde herabgewürdigt. Ich wurde beleidigt. Fehlbesetzte Führungspositionen sind hier leider fast die Regel. Alle hohen Level sind mit Consultants besetzt, die keine Ahnung haben und nur den Profit abschöpfen wollen. Man wird in Level eingestuft und von ganz oben in regelmäßigen Bewertungszyklen fertig gemacht. Kompetente Mitarbeiter werden vergrault.

Kollegenzusammenhalt

Durch permanentes Hiring-Firing gibt es kein Teamgefühl. Aufpassen! Kollegen sprechen oft hinter dem Rücken über andere! Man nutzt gerne Wissen aus, um Kollegen zu diskreditieren und loszuwerden. Es wird offenkundig gelogen. Vor allem die Manager geben in großen Offsite-Meetings und Happyness Surveys gerne vor, fürs Team da zu sein... hintenrum drehen sie dir aber bereits einen Strick und machen dich im Einzelgespräch fertig.

Interessante Aufgaben

Stress pur und oftmals immer das gleiche. Kleine Aufgaben werden enorm aufgeblasen - Manager betreiben Mikromanagement und geben regelmäßiges subjektives Feedback, dass keine sachkundige Kritik enthält.
Im Bewertungszyklus wird auch nicht deine Arbeitsleistung bewertet, sondern Softskill-Kompetenzen, die so abstrakt sind, dass es reine Auslegungssache ist und ein Leichtes, dich herabzuwürdigen.

Kommunikation

Keine Transparenz über Entscheidungen und Top-Down-Kommunikation. Du kannst von heute auf morgen entlassen und ausgetauscht werden. Teamzusammenhalt und ein Wir-Gefühl gibt es nicht, weil ständig Kollegen kommen und gehen. Daher gibt es auch kaum Kommunikation untereinander. Es ist sehr anonym und jeder versucht nur, seinen eigenen ***** zu retten. Im Bewertungszyklus wird dir dann plötzlich schlechtes Feedback gegeben, nur um dich klein zu halten, versprochene Boni nicht zu zahlen etc.

Kaum ältere Kollegen und kaum jemand mit Familie, Kindern etc.

Umgang mit älteren Kollegen

Älteres Kollegen? Welche älteren Kollegen? Älter als 40 wirst du hier nicht finden. Alles ist auf Drill und Leistung gedrimmt, da will man nur junge Leute, die wenig Ansprüche haben...

Karriere / Weiterbildung

Karriere kann man hier nicht machen. Aufstiegschancen werden verwehrt. Wenn du deine Leistung nicht mehr bringst oder zu viel forderst, wirst du entlassen. Und sie finden immer einen Weg, um dich loszuwerden.

Gehalt / Sozialleistungen

Ich wurde in meinen Gehaltsvorstellungen massiv gedrückt. Dadurch, dass sie deine Leistung herabwürdigen, halten sie dich klein. Sie nutzen Feedback, um dich schlecht zu reden und damit zu "legalisieren", warum du kein Recht auf Aufstiegschancen, Beförderungen, Gehaltserhöhungen, Bonuszahlungen hast. Man muss enorm viel leisten und geht mit einem Gehalt nach Hause, das gerade so fürs Nötigste reicht - und das trotz Berufserfahrung und abgeschlossenem Master-Studium.

Arbeitsbedingungen

Direkt an der Hauptstraße am Alexanderpatz. Viele teure Restaurants. Kein Platz zur Erholung. Man verlangt von dir 365 Tage im Jahr einen amazing Job, dem du nie gerecht wirst. Burnout-Fälle kommen immer häufiger vor. Einziges Gutes, es gibt Snacks. Aber die Schokoriegel trösten über das Mobbing auch nicht hinweg.

Ich kann meine Überstunden und die Mittagspausen, die ich durcharbeiten musste, nicht mehr zählen. Alles unbezahlt - natürlich. Und ein Dankeschön kann man auch nicht erwarten. Die Erfolge, die du erwirtschaftest, schreibt sich dein Manager zu.

Die Kundenbewertungen sind schlecht. Ich habe selbst schon Wayfairs Service ausprobiert und hier bestellt - enttäuschend und überteuert.

Verbesserungsvorschläge

  • Stellt kompetente Manager ein! Fangt an, eure Angestellten zu wertschätzen! Und macht endlich was dagegen, wenn Menschen am Arbeitsplatz gemobbt werden!

Contra

Die Herabwürdigung muss aufhören. Und hört endlich auf, diesen Review-Cycle zu nutzen, um damit Kündigungen, Abmahnungen etc. zu legalisieren.

Arbeitsatmosphäre

Good colleagues but you hate to come to work eventually because of the attitude of most of the top management. I have seen colleagues locked in the bathrooms crying because of the attitude of their managers.

Vorgesetztenverhalten

No communication, your opinion never counts for them. If you are not one of them, they literally will bully you or treat you as less valuable. This caused a lot of backstabbing between colleagues across several departments, just to justify the top-managers that you are worth. Since most of the top managers are ex-consultants, they can lead a project is a good way but they are awful with people skills and you can see in the face of your colleagues that the motivation to work is literally to get a pay check, no more.

Kollegenzusammenhalt

Depending on which department you go, you can make good friends. Some other departments have fierce competition and you risk being backstabbed by your colleagues.

Interessante Aufgaben

Though the automation has increased over the time, there are still lots of manual work to do. Sometimes interns are doing more interesting projects than Specilialists/Managers and people don't get rewarded by their good ideas.

Kommunikation

Management won't communicate any important or relevant information with you, even if it affects your most personal projects or team members. It's almost the attitude of: You are small, you don't count. This gives you very few information on how to proceed with your projects and sometimes you will work in vain.

Gleichberechtigung

If you are not an ex-consultant and acquaintance of the current top management, you won't progress here. Old good managers, including lots of female managers have left the company because there is no space for equality or discussion. It's either their ideas or nothing else.

Umgang mit älteren Kollegen

The way of working from the ex-consultants in the management across most departments has literally killed the start-up atmosphere that existed in Wayfair 2-3 years ago. There is no space for creativity, testing new ideas or experimenting because the management won't treat you as equal and they don't care about your ideas or initiative.

Karriere / Weiterbildung

They have a budget for personal learning which you can use but the internal offering for courses is really lame. You can be done with all of them in 2 months and the content is very basic (intern / entry level). Many Managers struggle learnings skills on management but the Top Management don't pay attention to this because they are only focused on profit. If you are not an ex-McKinsey consultant and friend of one of them, your chances of progressing inside the company are very very limited. Also, they are cutting many jobs in Berlin and moving their operations and facilities in Ireland because is cheaper to hire workers there. The carrier chances in Berlin are slightly better because in Ireland is literally manual work and poor management.

Gehalt / Sozialleistungen

People with 3-4 years in the company in a Specialist or Manager position could be earning less than new employees on Entry Level. Totally unfair treatment towards old employees and their value but also new employees don't get most rewards at the beginning. They have restructured the compensation scheme recently but the top management (ex-consultants) are not transparent with they outcome of salary increases or reasons to give you a yearly bonus.

Arbeitsbedingungen

I have had sick team members on my team and at the hospital but still the management expects them to work. Most colleagues are tired about the conditions that the ex-consultants brought to Wayfair because most of them don't want to work like consultants but rather as normal employees.

Umwelt- / Sozialbewusstsein

On their own facilities and their partners use way too much carton, plastic and polystyrene. There is not even a single initiative inside the company to implement green packaging or to work with partners on this. The management cares now only about money and unfortunately the environment is not a priority for them. They only care that the suppliers ship their furniture regardless of their environment impact.

Work-Life-Balance

People steal other colleagues ideas, people work from 7am to 9pm, management don't care about your opinion, even when you are sick they will put pressure on you. Many talented people on various departments have left because of burn-out, terrible managers or serious personal discussions with the ex-consultants sitting on the top management.

If you ask a group of friends, who has heard of Wayfair, only 10% would say they know the brand. The company is big in the US but in Europe they have a long way to go. In terms of image, working for them has never brought me any particular benefits.

Verbesserungsvorschläge

  • The culture of the company has been completely destroyed by the management style of the ex-McKinsey consultants. They really need to work on the people and value their contributions.

Pro

With the employee discount (5-10%), you might be able to buy something nice.

Contra

I would strongly advice any friend or even new candidates to *NOT* apply to this company. Talented people is not valued here for their ideas, for their personality or for their hard work. The top management they hired (Ex-Consultants) are only profit oriented and you won't make much progress as a professional here. Unfortunately, this won't change in the near future as even the US-Management board is ok with having this bad management style. If you are looking for a company with good culture, team empathy and career opportunities, I would look for other companies in the sector or in Berlin. It's definitely not even worth the shot to work for Wayfair.
